Had the same problem. By lid I assume you mean transparency unit. To fix, it is necessary to remove the transparency unit from the scanner. Then IN A CLEAN AREA! with the glass side up unscrew the 6?screws that hold the top unit together. There will be a hinge assembly inside. You must remove it, clean it, and re grease it thoroughly. I used lithium grease from an aerosol can. Has not given me problem since. the whole process took about a half hour. just make sure you are gentle, and keep everything clean.

Had this same problem, the two screws (not the first six screws) that hold the top part of the scanner (lid? transparency unit?) to back of the hinge had worn through the plastic and there was no more leverage. We are getting rid of it. Time for an update anyway.

Fuzzy scanned image from Epson Expression 10000XL scanner

Make sure that the item being scanned is lying flat against the scanner's glass. If the scanned image is still fuzzy after adjusting the object, clean the scanner glass with a lint-free cloth and some vinegar or ammonia-free window cleaner.
Hope this helps you. Please If this solutions solves you problem, please do not forget to rate my solution. If not, then please comment back so I can help some more

Door/Hinge is very tight, have to push down hard when scanning

Remove the transparency unit from the scanner. Then carefully remove the six screws holding the hinge. Use WD 40 to lubricate hinge.

Funky look to images

Hi folks. I am the originator and have the solution to the problem. I feel a little stupid because I overlooked using a plastic insert/guide which is placed on the scanner, fitting on notches. It lets the scanner know to use the transparency device and provides a notch for film holder placement. It has been so long time since I used film ever since digital photography took over, I overlooked using this plastic insert. With it placed, I can scan film fine. Thanks

Communication with scanner

You could take it apart and see if you can lubricate the shaft the the scanner sits on with some vasoline. If that doesn't it could be that the stepper motor that controls the scanner is going bad in it.

Transparency adaptor won't close

Remove the transparency adaptor from the scanner bed (unscrew the two smaller screws, then slide back and off) and then remove the glass (and plastic frame) of the transparency adapter (there are six screws).

By the hinge there is a small white plastic switch. Usually the transparency adaptor hits this when it's closed, letting your computer know that it is ready to scan. What I did, as bcvideo did, was take duct tape and firmly taped the switch to the side of the transparency adaptor, using several small strips of tape.

The scanner works well now. You may need/want to put something on top of the scanner if it does not fully close.
