The usb port where you insert the cable on the hard drive came loose and fell into the hard drive. This wan not due to any wear and tear drops or mis use of the product. I attempted to connect the usb and the connector fell into the device. I have a lot of precious files on this hard drive and need to know if this can be fixed or if their is a cable that can go into the ext port on the hard drive that i can access on my computer

1. the only way to know what breally has gone wrong is to open the enclosure & check. if the Ports has broken off fromm the PCB borad inside then ( if you are technically savvy) you can resolder it back. ( the disk has to be removed first) if not you have two option.

1. take a device to a repair shop.
2. buy a new enclosure & swap the disk

1. It may be due to the electronics in the USB case.
You can purchase a new case and install the hard drive and connect to the USB port to your laptop/PC.
If the drive is not seen after this then the drive itself may be damaged.
If you disconnected the USB drive without "safely removing it in Windows it may have damaged the hard drive controller.

My 40gb smardisk firelite usb connector has broken loose. I have files that i would like to have. There is another ext switch next to usb what is that and is that another way to get my files what type...

The other connector on the USB Firelite is for external power if needed. You will need to buy another 2.5" hard drive enclosure and pull the drive from the firelite and put it in the new one to get the files. Before you buy a new one open the firelite and take the drive with you to verify if it is an ide or sata drive. This will determine the type of enclosure you need. You could also take it to a local computer store and have them back the data up to dvd, but this can get expensive. You can typically get a new 2.5" ide enclosure for under twenty dollars.

I plug my usb external hard drive into my laptop but it does not read. How can I fix it?

Have you tried changing which USB port it's hooked into. If not is there any cd (Drivers/Software) for your external / that it came with?
If not you might have to search for unrecognized hard ware. This will help with that: http://www.techmantras.com/content/finding-drivers-unrecognized-hardware-windows-system

Make sure you are connecting it to a usb 2.0 port. Usb 2.0 will supply the 5v power the device needs. also use the cable that came with the drive. some drives plug into 2 usb ports.
