Question about NetGear WGT624 Wireless Router
Make sure you have your manual nearby when your first setting up your router.
If someone configured the device for you already, please contact them for assistance.
If this is a brand new unit and you have not done any changes. Then lets begin by connecting to the wireless with a lan / ethernet cable / wire.
To make sure you don't connect the cable to the wrong port, consult the user manual on what port is required to be used when configuring the router, do not use the port labeled DSL, Modem, Or internet. Use either 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5.
After you have connected the cable, then we need to find the ip address of the router, which is not 192.168.1.1 on all devices, it varies. To find out what address this router has Hold down the windows key and press R. In the run menu write CMD and click OK
Now On the black command / shell window, write ipconfig and hit enter.
You will get a listing of addresses, take note of DEFAULT GATEWAY, this will be the address of the wireless router.
Now, open your browser and write HTTP:// and then write the default gateway address.
Now you will be presented with the configuration pages of the router, you need to consult the manual for the default username and password combination, which is not admin admin most of the time, it can be blank, or something completely different, see your documentation.
Once inside. You can change the network name, security, key, and many more settings.
For a start, I'd like you to turn off the security off the wireless. make sure there is no key or security turned on, then change the name of the network to something that you will remember. Then save the settings and the router will restart.
Now, go wireless, and try connecting to the network. if this works and you get online (as long as the router is connected to a modem, cable modem, or otherwise to internet access, alone it will not work)
So now we are about done, now connect with a cable again, go to the settings again, now set up WPA-psk or wpa2-psk mixed mode security and put in a password of 13 characters, not longer, not shorter. Longer passwords should work, but lets start with a shorter one.
Once you have those set up (consult the documentation for assistance) save the settings, and the router restarts. Disconnect from it and try connecting wireless again, you will be asked for a password. Now you should be online and protected.
Optional security measures that you can turn on for extra safety are mac filtering and turning off the SSID broadcasting. Those are advanced features, consult the manual again. and if something goes wrong, you may have to reset the router back to factory defaults and do this all over again (instructions again in the documentation)
Thanks and let me know if you need further assistance.
