Some suggestions before you start if I may;

1) Your body carries Static electricity. Static will fry out (Short Circuit) the components inside the computer. You probably won't see it, or feel it.

Recommend you follow anti-static precautions.

Computer unplugged from Power;
You can purchase, and wear an ESD wrist strap, and connect the alligator clip to the metal frame of the open computer case,

OR,
Touch the metal frame of the open computer case, BEFORE you reach inside, to relieve your body of Static.

Should you get up, and walk away in the middle of working on your computer, upon your return Touch the metal frame again.

All the components, (i.e., Motherboard, Processor, Ram Memory, Graphics card if used, harddrive, etc), are susceptible to static shock, but the Processor is the most susceptible.

This is HP Support, and the main page for the Pavilion a420n Desktop PC,

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=388431&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&submit.y=9&submit.x=9&lang=en&cc=us

Left-click on Manuals.
Now Left-click on - Part Replacement Instructions

Upon clicking you may not see anything happening for up to 30 seconds. The file is downloading in the background.
Advise letting the file download all the way before looking through it.

This is a PDF file. You can save it to your computer, whereby you can burn it to a CD disk for easy access. Should you not know how to do this, and wish to, just post in a Comment.

(After you burn it to a CD disk, you can remove it from the computer, and free up harddrive space, also)

The Part Replacement Instructions show, and detail how to;
1) Open the computer case

2) Remove and replace an optical drive (CD/DVD drive)

3) Remove and replace the Power Supply

4) Remove and replace the Harddrive

5) Remove and replace any expansion cards, (Graphics card, sound card, modem, etc)

6) Remove and replace a diskette drive. (Floppy Drive)

7) Remove and replace the Front Panel

What is not detailed is removing the Heatsink/Fan combo, (Processor fan), and the Processor.
[Also a few other details which I will outline below]

The processor is an AMD Athlon or AMD Athlon XP.
Uses a Socket A processor socket, on the motherboard. (Socket A is also referred to as Socket 462)

This page from HP Support is the Motherboard Specifications for the Pavilion a420n,

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00063254&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=388431

If you scroll the page down you will be presented with a schematic of the motherboard, and below that a photo of the motherboard.

The motherboard is made by Asus for HP. It's an Asus A7V8X-LA.

This is a PDF motherboard manual for the Asus A7V8X-LA motherboard,

http://www.elhvb.com/mboards/OEM/HP/manual/kamet2_manual.pdf

Details where are the cables attach to on the motherboard. (Wires)
Details removing and replacing the Processor.
Details where the Jumpers are.

Especially details where the Front Panel wires go to on the motherboard.

This is on page 18.
(Click on the Zoom In icon at the top (+), and if you zoom to 125 percent, it's easy to see the pins in the Front Panel header on the motherboard)

Should you have any questions regarding this, fire away. Will be happy to answer them.

My hp pavillion a420n keeps shuting off and turning itself on every once and a while. Also othe flash keeps crashing and programs keep failing. Any clue what it may be telling me?????

Hardware failure - the voltage to the processor is unstable because either the PSU or the rectifiers on the motherboard have aged. Open the case and look at the motherboard - if some of the capacitors on it are bloated then you will have either to replace them or the entire board. If the capacitors are fine in there then the fault is in the PSU - you can get a new one for less than $20 at every pc shop.

You almost certainly have a virus. If you can't even get into safe mode the easiest way to fix it is remove the hard drive and back up any files on it with a different computer, then re-install Windows on the original drive.

You can try booting from your Windows XP installation disk and using the recovery console there to repair your installation. That's not too hard and I would say works 30% of the time.
