Question about Brother ML-100 Typewriter

Need to clean the platen

We need to clean the rollers under the platen and the platen as labels have gotten stuck on them. Some typewriters you can remove the platen to get to these rollers but we can't seem to be able to do that with the ML 100. Do you have any suggestions as to how we can get these sticky labels off?

IF you can't get the platen roller out, then what you can do is get a cleaner called " GOO GONE". Take a rag or paper towel, and pour some of the goo gone on the rag where the labels are located. IMPORTANT PART: You want enough Goo Gone on the rag so you can saturate the label. I have even CAREFULLY poured some Goo Gone right from the container onto the label.
Just don't go crazy with the Goo Gone.... You do not want to pour sooooo much onto the platen roller where it drips down it the frame of the machine and possibly onto the main board.
REMEMBER.... Just enough to saturate the label.

After the label is saturated.... WAIT AT LEAST 3 minutes. I usually wait closer to 5 minutes, and then you will notice that the label can be easily pulled away from the platen.
After all of the labels are removed, go over the entire platen with the Rag with Goo gone, and then go over it again with a clean dry rag.

I hope this works for you as well as it has worked for my customers.
Good luck.
Mac =)

How do I take off a label that is stuck on the metal strip under the roller?

Trying to disassemble the typewriter to remove the platen (roller) will most likely be too difficult to do.
Try this instead. Pour some rubbing alcohol on a piece of paper and try feeding that into the typewriter
As the alcohol loosens the label then try pushing it out with a flexible piece of plastic like a credit card or even a piece of cardboard..

Good Luck

Need to disassemble the unit to get at a sticker that is lodged under the platen/roller. Anybody know how to do this on a Brother GX-6750?

This is a common problem when typing address labels.

There are no instructions on how to do it, but one should never roll the sheet with labels back in order to take it out.
To remove the sheet with unused labels always roll it out to the front. That is, feed it through.

Please don't try to remove the label using any type of a sharp object. This will only damage the feed rolls and score the platen.

Yes, I have done it many times.
First you need to remove the top half of the cover.
Then you need to remove the platen to get access to where the label is stuck.

You'll need a medium Philips screwdriver and a Hex wrench.
I don't remember the size, but there is a multy-wrench set from Canadian Tire has the right size.

Please feel free to contact me. :)

How do I take apart my Brother typewriter to remove a label stuck to the metal bar where the paper feeds in?

I wish I had one in front of me, but I don't. Brother used two ways of holding the Platen (big black roller in place. Open the top cover and look at the frame where the platen is held. You will likely see plastic clips holding the axial that runs through the platen (85% of brother machines have clips), or you will see that the axial runs directly through the frame. If you see clips just squeeze the tabs and lift up. Note which side has the gear, so that it is reinstalled the same way. If you don't have clips you will need to loosen the Allen screws holding the knob to the platen roller, and the roller will lift right out. If the label left any of the rollers sticky they must be completely cleaned before reassembly, Goo-Gone is a good product to remove gummy labels.

Best of luck, Ron

I got a label stuck on the roller of my ibm wheelwriter 30. the only way to remove the label completely will be to remove the roller. How do I remove the roller or is there any easier way to remove my...

While I haven't seen your model of machine in many moons, the roller was generally not difficult to remove once the plastic housing was removed.
If it appears to be a bigger job than I recall, you could take 1/4 - 1/2 sheet of plain paper, saturate it (not dripping) with naphtha (lighter fluid) and feed it into the machine to cover the label. Allow some time to soak, feed the paper out and wipe the residue of adhesive with a clean lint free rag several times, wetting it if necessary with a few drops of naphtha to complete the removal.
You might feed several clean sheets of paper through before using to ensure no residue or fluid has stayed behind.

Label stuck under typewriter platen/roller of Adler Royal

Roll a new piece of paper the best you can. Dribble a little paint thinner on the paper, letting it run down under the roller. The thinner will disolve the adhesive on the label. After a couple minutes, you should be able to roll out the paper and the laber with no problem.

Remove platen on Swintec 8011 typewriter

I can't remember which models have which features, but some Swintecs have pop out plantens, and some don't. If it is pop out, you will find a plastic V clip in the frame of the typewriter through which the platen shaft passes on both sides of the typewriter and platen. Pay close attention to which side the gear of the platen is situated before removing to make sure you put it back on the same side of the typewriter. Squeeze the V clips and pull the platen up and out. When re-installing, make sure the metal paper table is in correctly by aligning the fingers on each side into their mounting guides, or you will have paper jams, paper feed trouble, and other issues. You can clean the labels out with something that will not leave an oily residue on the paper table, paper feed rollers, or the platen. Re-install the platen by aligning the V clips to the frame on each side, and press them down until they snap into place.
