Why doesn't the dryer stay running when I let go of the start switch?

Hi, There is only one reason I can see the dryer stops after you let off on the start switch is the motor because GE motors has start switches either built inside the motor which is non removable or built outside the motor which can be replaced .
Its called a motor start switch and the way to locate it is to remove the front panel on the dryer and remove the drum and belt and then write down the motor model number and look at all the wires that go into the motor which is your motor start switch that is held in by two screws but before you remove it don't forget to copy the wire down on piece of paper of how you remove them .
If you don't see a black switch to the motor then its built in and the motor needs to be replaced.

Maytag neptune dryer model mde3000ayw wont start

If it only runs with start button held in then you have a problem with the door switch. Check to be sure the wires are on it. Here is the switch to order in case it is bad.

Kenmore Elite electric dryer model # 110.64994300\r\n I'm pretty sure I need to replace the push to start switch because it starts when I push it but stops when I take my finger off of it. So I held it...

I don't believe replacing the switch is going to fix the problem. provided the power cord is wired correctly you have a control board issue. Their is a small micro computer in the the console that will cause your exact concern start while holding the button the stops, and no heat.

Clothes Dryer won't stay on after switch is depressed.

some of them dryers have a switch other than the push button located behind the console. it also has an identical heat switch beside it. if that holding switch is bad it will not stay running. of the two identical switches the run switch is on the left. good kuck.

Kenmore Elite 73942 Gas Dryer only runs with start button held

Unplug the dryer. Open the control console.Mark and remove the wires from the start switch.
Using a volt meter set for continuity, touch meter leads to R1 and R2 while pushing the switch. No reading is a bad switch.
Touch meter leads to R2 and CT1. No reading is a bad switch.
If the switch checks out good the start windings in the motor are bad.

The stop button will not stay and makes a buzzing

This sounds just like you have a bad door switch. You check it by taking the two wires off of it and taping them together. Then try the dryer. It should take off and run normally. If so, replace door switch. Good luck.

Dryer won't stay on when button is pushed the button has to be held down for the dryer to run

A centrifugal switch has failed within the dryer. The centrifugal switch maintains electrical flow to the motor after the start button has been released (this is a safety measure) When you press the start button you put power directly to the motor; once started the centrifugal switch then puts power to the motor until the time then shuts it down.
I hope this may have helped you,
Tom

Dryer will not turn on and stay on.

Hello , bad news here , when you press the start button it sends power to the motor and then a clutch sets in and closes a set of points that then sends power to your element -if the clutch does not engage the motor will not continue to run or send power to the element and that is what is happening to your dryer.
not an easy fix at all , the clutch is bad and its located inside the motor and the entire motor would need replaced to repair this problem. they range from 80-100 dollars and would take about 1-2 hours to change.
let me know if you have any other questions.
