Question about Canon SmartBase MP390 All-In-One InkJet Printer

5 Answers

Black printing I was given an MP390. It wouldnt print black with the cartridge it came with so I replaced it with Canon cartridge. The printer makes expected noises but the pages come out completely blank. The colour cartridge (also relaced) seems to work ok. Can you help? This is obviously a good printer and I really want to get it working but am fed up that I may have spent several quid for nothing! Any help you can offer would be much appreciated! N

I see you have the same problem as me. I've been very happy with the Canon Smartbase MP390 for the last 2+ years - until it stopped printing black! I've replaced the black cartridge twice and reset counters, gone through the troubleshooting steps and still no luck in resolving this. Let's hope someone can help us.

I too was given a canon mp390 because the black wasn't working at all. I tried the flush out solutions etc with limited success. I have just now blown it out through the hole in the top of the cartridge with it still in the printer head with an air compressor (turn it right down to low pressure) and it now works perfect. I was just about to give up, but its alive again.....

Hi wont believe but ive got the printer to not only print black again but also colour! and the solution was as easy as this (i still cant believe it!)...take the printhead out wih the cartridges still in. Get a load of tissue or old towel and wrap around the bottom of the printhead - try not touch the green bit...then blow - yeas BLOW thorugh the tiny holes in the top of the cartridges...I did this - was getting annoyed and lightheaded...and then suddenly a splat of black ink...then a splat of colour in - dab it so its not messy - put the ink head back into the printer and re-align...then try do a nozzle test too. Im sooooooooooooooooooooo stoked - this really worked after missioining for 2-3 weeks now and also replacing the printhead etc...lets hope it stays this waay and hope this helps you all too!

I'm pleased it worked for you NB28, but it hasn't worked for me and my printer is still not printing black. Looking at forums, it seems a common problem and soaking the print head is suggested in distilled water and blowing it out with an air compressor! Looks like that might be might next step when I get time!!

Thanks for the advise anyway Patrillica.

Can't print the black ink

I spoke with technical support at Canon and they determined that the printer has died. There is no solution to this problem, other than getting a new printer. Thanks anyway.

Smeared lines

Okay, this was the problem I posted a few days ago. It's fixed now, so in case you have the same problem with smearing, here's what the help desk from Canon suggested: Open the cover and remove the ink cartridges. There is a gray lever in front of the cartridges. Lift this lever and the printhead can be easily removed.
Our printhead had a buildup of black ink on the surface. I carefully removed this with rubbing alcohol. I let the printhead dry and replaced everything. No more smearing. Imagine a help-desk that actually helped!

Yes, you can print out in black from a color cartridge, however it is not advised as you will run out of colored ink twice as fast as it combines all the colors to get black. However it works great when your in a pinch and need black ink.
Just go to your printer properties when you print and the option will be in there someware.

Black not printing

I just ran into a similar issue with my MP390. Actually both the color and black inks were not printing very well. I would get very inconsistent printing. Fixed the problem very easily and quickly as follows: On the top of each print cartridge, there is a small hole. Remove the print head (lift the gray bar at the front of the print head and lift out the print head) with the cartridges still in place. Holding the print head over a piece of paper/paper towel, blow into the holes on the top of the cartridges (either directly or using a straw/tube of some kind). You should get ink coming out of the botton of the print head, both color and black. Replace and print head and test print.
