Question about Briggs & Stratton Briggs Stratton 7 kW Auto Standby Generator

Generator will not start

It just will not start. the starter motor works and turns over but generator will not fire.. and its not out of fuel

There are Three things a Motor needs to work, Fuel, Spark, Air. So you simply check each step, If you have Fuel, and you are sure it's getting to carburettor, then, First check, spark plug, (Replace is best), spark plug leads, and Ends. See if there is a "Spark" when the Motor is turned over. IF there is a good spark, OK, if NOT find out why, check, coil, check, points/Electronic ignition. Alternator. you cant keep cranking and cranking
5 cranks and stop cool down

Try this again. Starter works fine, checked fuel line,sprk plg and cln carb, just doesnt fire


Try checking your oil sensor. These are common problem areas that will shut your generator down, and prevent it from starting.

Why does my powerhouse PH3100ri generator run fine for about 5 minutes or so then dies and it will not start again in till it sets for 30 minutes or so then it will fire right up please help!!


Maybe faulty CDI ignition module ? There are a number of components ( electrolytic capacitors ) in the module that can fail with temperature rise.
A test... Remove the ignition plug lead when motor has stopped after the 5 minutes and put a wire inside the plug cap and place end near a metal part of motor. Careful not to zap yourself... Pull starter and look for ignition spark. If there is no spark then probable fault is ignition module. If there is spark then problem may be in fuel system.

Do check vent on fuel tank is open.

Do check choke is turned to off once motor is running.

Do check the oil level as the low oil cutoff can cause shutdown and will result in no spark.

I took de oil filter out i connected direct tube i start de it didnt start


Check de-compression lever. Motor will not start if de-compression lever is operated. The lever stops the valves from closing. If lever is operated then there will be no compression when motor is pulled over with starter cord or electric starter operated.



Check fuel cut off at injector pump is not operated. This is how motor is normally stopped.



There must be no air in the fuel line, fuel filter, injector jump or injector. Undo the fuel line at the injector and pull starter or operate electric starter. Fuel should spit out. If not, crank some more until fuel comes through.

if there is fuel in the tank, filter not blocked and injector pump working then if not fuel at injector then maybe injector pump faulty.



If fuel at injector line then remove injector, crank motor and look for spray of fuel.



If if you have checked for spray of fuel and motor compression then motor should start.

Motor turns over but won't fire. Had a new starter motor and batteries. It appears to be getting fuel from the pipes that connect to the injectors.


spray a small amount of starting fluid in the air intake while turning it over, if it fires, it's not getting fuel.

Initially, is there an alarm/immobilizer? If yes is it active/enabled?

Offhand, by "...wont start..." do you mean starter motor will not spin or engine turns but will not fire?

Starter motor will not turn:
  • press start button, check for +12 on green/black wire from starter switch to starter relay;
  • if there is, is there a clicking sound?
  • if there is a clicking sound, short temporarily the 2 big terminals of the starter relay;
  • if starter motor turns, starter relay faulty;
  • if not, starter motor needs looking into particularly the carbon brushes and the commutator segments.

Starter motor turns but no spark:
  • check/replace sparkplug;
  • check pulsating voltage on green/white wire going to ignition coil coming from the ignition control unit;
  • check pulsating low AC voltage on green wire going to ignition control unit coming from the pulse generator coil;
  • check presence of IGN +12 leading to the ignition control unit.

Starter motor turns, there is spark but motor will not run:
  • check automatic choke (blue & white/black wires);
  • check fuel quality and quantity delivered to combustion chamber (check sparkplug if wet).

My 2004 Ford Explorer wont start, I changed the battery and to no avail


If the motor doesn't turn over at all then it's probably a starter/solenoid problem. If it turns over but won't fire up, get some starting fluid from auto parts store and spray some into intake. If it fires there's a fuel delivery problem. So change fuel filter and try again. If that doesn't work, then change fuel pump.

if starter fluid made it chug, I would suspect fuel pump fuse, relay or pump, also fuel filter.

Generator won't start & now starter will not shut off when it has power


I have seen this happen in cars- the problem is most likel the ignition unit -they do not spend a lot of money on them in production. So here is what is happening . When you are putting key in and out metal filings are being deposited inside unit- this is now causing a short and draining batteries. Start here.This happened with cars a few years ago and they were catching fire in driveways.Call dealer and get replacement ignition- should be cheap fix. Good luck.
