Question about Sony KDS-50A2000 50" HDTV

4 Answers

I have a Sony KDS-50A2000, No picture, No sound, the bulb is a bluish purple color, and the green light is solid on front of TV. My grandparents took the TV to have it serviced the tech told them it would be around 600 dollars to have it fixed, they just bought a new TV and gave me this TV, i talked with TV tech and he said the problem was with the video 1 module assembly part# AR/Z05147AG called Sony to get part they have no part # like that and have nothing listed for a video 1 module assembly. I called tech back to ask about part# and he said if you do not want me to fix it i cant help you anymore. I have removed cover and have visually checked circuit boards for any visual damage and i see nothing. I think it might be something simple and he just wanted to charge us for something that was not broke.

Okay I got to messing with the TV some more tonight, I said in the beginning that there was no picture or sound well there is sound just no picture. There is no LED flashing on the front of the TV. Not sure if this would help any but I can get the sound to work with the RCA jacks plugged into the front of the TV and the rear of the TV. Just no picture. I think it would be somethihng like a video card like in a PC. Also the tech was saying that the part that was wrong with the TV was 1 of 3 vidieo modules and that all 3 had to be replaced? Maybe this will help you, help me.

The TV does have sound and there are no flashing led, everything seems normal just no picture.

What exactly do you mean by "the bulb". Is it the front panel LED? And yes I do think the tech is right. It can be the main audio/video board but it wont cost you 600$. Anyways first please clarify my question so that we can continue.

This is a 2006 LCD rear projection set which means it uses a lamp etc. There are several boards inside: Sony 1-474-012-11 BALLAST Sony A-1205-146-A BOARD, A1 Sony A-1205-147-A BOARD, B1 Sony A-1186-654-A BOARD, G Sony A-1166-579-A BOARD, H1 Sony A-1166-580-A BOARD, H2 Sony A-1166-581-A BOARD, H3 Sony A-1205-237-A BOARD, QM Sony A-1206-154-A BOARD, QT Sony A-1166-582-A BOARD, S1 Sony A-1166-583-A BOARD, S2 Sony A-1166-584-A BOARD, T This would not be easy to trace down without real knowledge and I suspect it may not be to tell which is needed note the part numbers and if your parents paid for a estimate on the repair they are entitled to know exactly which board or boards need to be replaced. If you need prices on any of the boards you can GOOGLE the part number OR let me know and I will get them from the Sony site where I got this one. There is also one other thing that does take some time and patience: Call Sony and ask to speak to a Technical expert there. Sometimes they are willing to help and sometimes not. Also some models that have had multiple failures will be recorded and some may be covered by Sony. In calling you have nothing to lose except some time and a little money if you cannot get them on a 800 number. I know you have talked to other experts here and it is upsetting to get vague answers and no real information about what is inside the set. Please follow up and feel free to ask me anything as I am here to help. SD TECH

The first thing you can do is download a copy of the service manual for yourself at the following website:

http://www.givemefile.net/smanuals/lcd_tvs/sony/kds-50a2000.html

I am surprised that the tech gave you a part number and a price for the repair. Near the beginning of the manual you will see the self diagnostic LED blink codes for you TV. The problem you describe is definitely a combination of more than one failed component or board. Without actually testing the TV, or checking the blink codes at the least, it would be difficult to ascertain the issues causing your problem. In the back of the Service Manual is a complete listing of all of the parts in the TV as well as their part numbers. As you can see there is no part number even close to either the name or the part number you were given. In all fairness perhaps the tech misunderstood the model number you gave him.

I would suggest getting a reputable shop to diagnose your TV and give you an estimate on the repairs. Most shops will charge you a minimum of one hours labor charge to diagnose your problem and then give you the repair estimate. At that time you could then decide if it is worth fixing that TV, or going out and buying yourself a new one. With the recent hefty price drops on flat panel TV's it's worth finding out which way you should go.

I can help you with your Sony KDS-50A2000.

You can find the actual part numbers to order by referring to the Sony Service Manual for your model. The diagnostic & troubleshooting steps you might want to follow are also in this book. Right off the top of my head, a bluish purple bulb doesn't sound right - but then I'd expect a flashing diagnostic led if the bulb was just blown & it is the end of a long day for me tonight. There are more diagnostic tests you can run from looking through the manual.

If you would describe your tv servicing experience as limited, please read up on the safety issues involved with high voltages etc in there.
I think your gut feeling about the service tech is probably right on the money, but then again there's always a place for qualified technicians servicing gear. You might want to make a couple calls to other places if you don't want to poke around in there.

I hope that helps.

My sony kds-50a2000 picture is green why? I replaced projection lamp the picture was great but now the picture is terrible everthing seems to have a yellow tinge to it and green seems to be dominant...

The problem is the optical block and nothing else but. Contact the dealer from which you purchased the set to see if you qualify for Sony's extended warranty on this very, very expensive part, which may be covered by a class action lawsuit Check here http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/news-item.pl?news_id=367&mdl=KDS60A2020 The lawsuit covers all the KDS models. It seems that Sony continued making these rear projections even though it knew the optical block failed prematurely. When you get it fixed, go to setup and make sure the cooling fan is on HIGH and power saving is ON. Both of those features will extend your TV's life, including the optical block and the projection lamp. Further, bring a portable compressed air tank to the TV and, with a narrow nozzle, empty it into every opening in the set's back. At least once per month, check for dust settling on the rear of the stand behind the TV -- when it gets thick, get the air tank.

Sony KDS-50A2000 - bulb replaced but picture still yellow

Hi,It sounds like a light engine problem Sony is having.Basically the light of the lamp goes through tunnels that have mirrors that direct the lamp to 3 main LCD chips,These 3 LCD chips are blue, green, and red they blend to create the image and colors. When they start to fail you'll get color discoloration like what you are getting. You will need to replace the optical block because unfortunately they don't sell the LCD chips by themselves.GOD BLESS YOU!

Sony KDS-50A2000 screen is in green tint

My Sony KDS 50 A2000 is 17 months old. Its the 50 Inch SXRD projection model. About two weeks ago the screen developed a green tint with cannot be tuned out, then a few days later the message began to appear on the screen that the bulb was nearing the end of its life and must be replaced.
Fortunately I have the Circuit City extended warranty.
I called and within just a few days a serviceman came out and replaced the projection bulb.
The Result: No change in the picture, the green tint remains on all channels, so I'm awating the next service call. Under the service warranty they have the option to repair or replace this set. If indeed this is the light engine (optical block) which I suspect and its going to cost $1,000 or more I may be looking at a new set.
When it works this is a great TV, but I have had three Sonys now including two other standard CRT models and now this one joins them in the junk heap, the other two also bit the dust after just about two years. Is it time to give up on Sony?
I know they have a class action suit on a similar model for this same problem. Caveat emptor
