Question about Minn Kota Riptide Sp Saltwater 70 Bow Mount Trolling Motor With Autopilot

4 Answers

Model sp 70. When 24 power supply is turned on to the trolling motor, the power drive immediately starts turning the shaft counterclockwise, and keeps doing so until 24 volt power turned off. There is no foot pedal to connect, and the co=pilot remote has no effect on stoppiong or starting the power drive turning, nor on turning the prop on or off, or changing the direction the shaft is being turned. A week before, it was working correctly. Where is the problem likely to be?

polarity is correct, and motor has been working fine up until friday when, while I was using it, suddenly the power drive started rotating the vertical composite shaft continuously and would not stop until I turned off the battery switch

Apparently either no one is really reading my question or no one has any idea how a minn kota motor works. I'm NOT haveing any trouble with the mtor that sins the prop. A second motor rotates the veritcal shaft that sticks down into the water with the prop and prop motor connected to the bottom of this shaft. Rotating this shaft is what steers the boat when the trolling motor is used. The trolling motor WAS WORKING PERFECTLY, ans there has been NO CHANGE in the battery hook up whatsoever. Just suddenly the "motor" that causes the vertical shaft to rotate started to make it rotate canstantly rather than just when it was ordered to do so be the remote control when I wanted the boat to steer right or left. It obviously has to do with the circuit boardes insied the unit, but I don't know which, and ony someone familiar with minn kota motors will have any idea to tell me which one to concentrate on.

Sorry, the problem persists when the remote is miles away from the boat. and today I took the side panel off the part of the trolling motor that actually is bolted to the bow of the boat--this panel contains a sealed circuit board with a small antenna attached; obviously it receives signal from the remote and passes it on. But even with this circuit board removed and unattached, the problem persists--so it has nothing to do with the remote control or the remote signal receiver. Finally, THERE HAS BEEN NO WIRES UNATTACHED OR ATTACHED OR REATTACHED ANYWHERE ON THE BOAT.

The drive motor or gear solenoid could be bad.

The co-pilot control could be faulty, supplying full voltage to the motor with reverse polarity. Try to check, or have someone check the voltage out of the control to see if it's reversed. If it is, the control is bad. The other scenario might be a connector that came loose, and was accidentally connected with reverse polarity, but that's a long shot and guess. Since there is no control over the voltage, I would suspect the co-pilot remote circuit or control first. That seems like it would be the most likely suspect culprit. Good luck, and hope this helps.

You either have the battery hooked up backwards or the unit has reversed polarity. The reversed polarity while rare does happen. What causes reverse polarity is - bad ground during a welding job -- and lighting strikes near or on the boat.
I am hesitant but I think the batteries are hooked up wrong. Either have a local boat yard give a thumbs up on your battery connection or take a chance on hooking them different. You can find a boat dealer - take pictures of the hook up and email them to them too. They will know better if you send the pictures to a dealer in your brand / model boat.

Lot of interference with unit transducer mounted on trolling motor when trolling motor is being used. Then clears up when not used.

Some how you have Radio Interference conflicting with your unit. The RF as it is called, may be coming from the engine. Try to connect to an INDEPENDENT power supply for the Eagle and not the same source your trolling motor. You seem to be getting line interference.

Turn off the power and remove the end cap at the center back end of the motor. The end of the motor shaft is then exposed and you can use a 9/16" open end wrench to verify that the motor shaft is turning freely.
If it offers resistance the pump needs to be opened and checked to find out why. If it does move freely, take it to a pool store or motor shop to test it. Rarely, a motor gets out of the factory DOA.

Mounting a sonor/transducer on a MinnKota Riptide ST

Did the unit come with a strap to mount the transducer to a bow mount electric? Most units do... If not there is probably one available for the unit as an aftermarket accessory or accessory from the manufacturer... Regarding the transducer wire, just wrap and rout this up the front of the bow mount motor shaft so when you pull the motor up and secure it, it is not going to get in the way. You could cable tie the cord down near the bottom of the shaft and one up near the top where they wont interfere with the motor bracket when the motor is positioned up on the boat.

Trolling motor will not spin with out being turned by hand.

Take the prop off and make sure the pin that goes through the shaft is in place. The prop could also not be sitting on the pin proper.
