Question about Sylvania CL872B (Black) 18 in. Flat Panel LCD Monitor

1 Answer

A friend gave me a sylvania cl-872b flat screen monitor he didn't need. He couldn't find the power supply (dc 12 v). I had one so I hooked it up. I also connected the sound to my mac g4. The screws on the vga cable couldn't reach the computer so I made sure the pin connection was well seated. Turning everything on I was happy to here the mac chime come from the monitor.....but that's all I get is sound, no picture and no lights on the monitors power indicator. I disconected the adapter and pressed volume and got no sound so I think the adapter is delivering juice. Do I need whatever power supply it came with to make this work? Do the vga screws act as a ground and make a difference. Or is this thing just a gift of garbage?

The AC adapter for this monitor is REGULATED 12VDC 4~5Amp. Is the one you are using regulated 12VDC with at least 4Amps?

But you also may have problem with the monitor itself, cannot tell until you use the correct AC adapter first.

Someone gave me an old Sylvania monitor (L15) Model no. PD-70FA but the 12V DC power cord is missing. It is not a standard type of powervcord and none of the stores I've been to (Staples, Office Depot,...

The power chord for this monitor is attached to a power adapter which converts mains voltage to 12 volts.
Check the power label on the monitor for the amp rating of the monitor and get an adapter that has an output of 12 volts and with the amp rating on the label or higher. Make sure the 0.3" power plug fits the monitor.

Have a flat screen viewsonic with no adapter cord. Takes a 12 v 3.3 amp. What would happen if I hook up a 12 volt supply with more than 3.3 amps? Thanks, Tom

Higher current is OK and better than not having enough and it does not do any damage, voltage cannot be higher.
Just think of it like a AAA and AA batteries, both have the same voltage but AAA has less current capacity.
The power supply must be regulated 12vdc though, which will be switch power supply type and also observe the DC plug' polarity (center positive).

Sylvania CL772B LCD monitor has no power

The board with 200-100-SH700 on it may be the problem. I came up empty trying to find anything with that number, there should be some other number either ink-stamped on the board or on a paper sticker.
Google can be your friend if you find the right number.
Somewhere there may be someone with one of the same with a broken screen. Ebay?

Hooking up the monitor

She should not have a prioblem. The PC should recognize new devise and look for the driver. If it says that driver not found, Go to DriverGuide, this is a great website and you can download any driver for FREE. Install it then she should have noprobs.

No speaker hook up on new moniter

If your old monitor was a Compaq, it had slots for the speakers to hang on and provided the power for the speakers. The speakers still got their input from a cable that plugged into the computer sound output jack. If those speakers are the style Compaq supplied when I worked at a Compaq service shop, they originally came with metal stands that fit into slots on the back so you could stand them up on their own, and a 12-volt power adapter so you could use them without the monitor. If you don't have those pieces, you can buy a suitable power adapter (12 volts DC at 1 amp) at Radio Shack but the speaker stands are hard to find. You could try eBay, or just make a holder of some kind. (A friend of mine used those little wooden stands you can buy to display plates to hold her speakers when she got a new monitor. They worked out pretty well.)

Or you can replace the speakers. A new set would have everything you need. But those Compaq speakers sounded pretty good, so if they're still working you might want to keep them.

Got flat screen as a gift

This monitor requires a power supply with a POSITIVE tip polarity.
Monitor requires 12 Volt DC @ 3.3 Amps output.
Make sure voltage is 12 Volts DC [absolute requirement]

Power Supply can have greater than 3.3 Amp capacity. More amp capacity increases price, so I wouldn't go for more than 5 Amps [minimum 3300 milliAmps, 5000 milliAmps will be more than adequate].

Put a surge protector on your computer and monitor to extend their life....better yet, a power conditioning battery backup system, that can supply constant voltage, to compensate line voltage when A/C, furnace, or other major appliance kicks on.
