HP C4680 Goes Offline

I bought a MacBook Pro and received a free HP C4680 printer. The printer works ok half the time, but it continually goes offline and the only way I can print a document is to close all applications and turn the printer and my Mac off and Restart. It then prints fine. It's frustrating. Is there an easier way to get the HP back online?

Thanks for the info. I did use the HP CD that came with the printer. Not sure if that was good or bad based on your email. I subsequently downloaded drivers from HP supposedly for Snow Leopard and reinstalled the printer. I have now done as you suggested and downloaded drivers from Apple. I will cross my fingers and let you know if this works..or not. Thanks again.

Getting the drives directly from Apple did not help. Just tonight the printer paused in the middle of a job and then went offline. I had to log off all apps and when I Restarted, the HP was listed three times. I don't know if it is HP or Apple, but after all the problems with the HP printer, I'm now using my old Canon MP780 for my printing. Not sure if I will keep the HP after the ink cartrdiges run out. Just too much of a pain. As a side note, the HP cartridges cost more and run out faster than the Canon's. Thank you for your help, it was worth a try.

Hi
Just a thought, did you use the HP CD that came in the box?
Go to Apple's website and look under the support - downloads section. You'll find a mega-sized download of up-to-date HP drivers. Download it and install it.
Then open the print and Fax setting in system preferences and remove the existing HP printer, You should then have no printers listed in the printer box.
make sure the printer is connected to the macbook and switched on and then use the Plus symbol to add a new printer. In less than a moment your printer name should appear in the empty space. Select it and wait. You should then get a thing saying 'Print Using...." It should fill in automatically with info about the driver being used.
Do what ever it asks and then close the window and see if you can print without the earlier problems.

It will be interesting to see. This comes up quite frequently.

The comment about the CD in the box is because HP were notoriously tardy in getting the Snow leopard drivers into their boxes. Most printers shipped with leopard and below drivers for quite a while.

Canon were on the ball quite quickly, but if things don't work as they should I always go and look on the web for the very latest drivers available.

Sometimes the drivers on Apples own site work better than those provided by the printer manufacturer.

We abandoned HP inkjets a long time ago and are now exclusively Canon.
You are right about ink prices, a set of Hp inks is invariable more than the printer cost! Mind you, genuine Canon inks are getting more expensive now.

" not online". will not print

All the drivers and utilities that are necessarily required for the HP printer to work smoothly under minimal errors shall be installed in the computer before trying to set-up a printer. The users are therefore advised to verify the printer drivers and utilities and reinstall them with their most recent versions by downloading the newest versions from the original HP support website. Doing so and reconnecting the printers will help in solving and preventing offline errors in your System. get more help for HP Printer Offline Error and hope this helps you.
Good Luck!

HP Photosmart C6180 goes Offline in Vista

Solution A:

Download and install this Critical Update for your printer directly from HP.

Solution B:

There have been cases where if the PC is turned off or goes into hibernate this can occur. To work around this issue the "HP CUE DeviceDescovery Service" must be disabled:

1) Click on the "Start Menu" icon on the bottom left corner of the screen, type "services.msc" in the "Start Search" edit box, and hit enter. This will trigger Vista to pop-up a "User Account Control" dialog to prompt for permission to continue. Click "Continue" to allow Vista to open the Services management console application.

2) The Services management console application is made up of 2 panels. The right panel contains a list of all services available on the system. Scroll thru this list and look for a service called "HP CUE DeviceDiscovery Service".

3) Right-click on "HP CUE DeviceDiscovery Service" and select "Properties" to open the "HP CUE DeviceDiscovery Service Properties" dialog.

4) From the "HP CUE DeviceDiscovery Service Properties" dialog, click on the "General" tab. If the "Service status" shows that the service has started, click on the "Stop" button to force the service to stop.

5) Change the "Start type" to "Disabled" and click on the "OK" button on the bottom of the dialog to apply the changes.

Solution C:

1. Set the printer to a static IP address
2. Logon to the machine as the administrator or with admin rights.
3. Remove/Reinstall the printer using the IP address
