Canon PowerShot A75 - LCD screen & pictures blury when taking pics

When I turn on my digital camera and look at the LCD screen of what I want to take a picture of, the image is blurry, resulting in a blurry picture. I have made sure that the AF assist is set to ON.

I use recharegable batteries in the camera. But I tried to put in some brnad new regular AA batteries and the problem remains.

I have a similar camera - there should be a slider button that lets you toggle between taking pics and viewing your pics. It is to the right of the screen (on back) and just under the selector knob on the top. When slid up (camera icon) you take pictures. When slid down (square with arrow icon) you view pics.
