Any type of gear oil will work for this. I know some gardners that use tranny fluid for heat

MAKE TWO PASSES SET THE DEPTH GUIDE SO IT JUST BREAKS THE GROUND, DON'T TRY TO DO IT ALL AT ONCE. SOON AS THE GROUND IS LOOSE IT WILL DIG MUCH BETTER.. IT SHOULD HAVE A FORWARD AND REVERSE FOR THE TINES, GEARS FOR FORWARD REVERSE DRIVE

I have a MTD yard machine rear tine tiller. Goes forward and reverse but tines wont rotate. How do I fix?

You will have to get into the gearbox. It isn't too hard but is time consuming. Sounds like the drive for the tiller has broken. Could just be the chain in the gearbox for the tiller drive.

Tines wont turn when in ground, but they will before they go into dirt

If it's a belt drive motor, you have either worn a bad spot on the belt or sheared a key off a shaft. If its a top motor bottom drive tiller, it will be the clutch where the shaft of the motor goes into the gearbox of the tiller. Let me know if this helps :)

How to remove rear tines to replace seals ?

The tines sometimes get frozen to the shaft. You might try penatrating oil and use a heat gun or hair dryer to heat to loosen.
Also tap wiht a hammer around shaft.
