Does your laptop still work? If it does I would turn it off immediately. It will depend which fan is not working. If it is your processor fan your chip is probably fried. Either way it is not safe to use until you get it checked out.

My problem is simple to describe: The computer starts and runs fine, except for the smell...and the heat. The smell resembles burning plastic, and the heat output is noticeably higher. There's no smoke...

It more than likey seems to be your fan if the heat from your tower is noticeably higher and the smell.

If computer still under gaurantee you will be able to get it repaired for free from the manufacturers.

If not, take the tower cover off, and get a hoover and **** all dust particles from the system.

You may also need to invest into another fan, this should stop the smell and also the overheating

Hope this helps and please rate thanks.

Fan smells like it burned up and wont come back on only 3 years old

If it smelled burned then it is burned. Do not put you and your family at risk by trying to fix this fan. I strongly recommend you buy a new one. you will find some real nice ones starting at $60.

Strong ''burning plastic'' type smell coming through heating ducts.

it sounds like you have a main air movement system motor that is burning out. it will probably quit on you in the next few days. likely cost to repair from company 375-700 somtimes more if you have a variable speed furnace, in which case you should consider replacing the whole furnace for what it would cost for the motor on one of those.

Strong ozone-like burning smell

Sounds to me like the motherboard inside the unit is on it's way to thermal overload. This is a common problem with this particular model. You'll smell electronics burning and one day it'll quit altogether with a burst of smoke. I had this happen to me and I traced the problem back to a faulty triac (transistor-like device) that overheated and caused the circuit board and wiring harness to burn up from excessive current draw. I repaired my motherboard with a new triac ($6) and rewired the harnesses. A cooling fan on the heatsink of the board would solve this problem.
