Does your laptop still work? If it does I would turn it off immediately. It will depend which fan is not working. If it is your processor fan your chip is probably fried. Either way it is not safe to use until you get it checked out.

T5020 emachine seems to have dead power supply- how can I confirm?

If the PSU fans only work for a short time usually this means that the PSU is shot

If you suspect your power supply has gone bad, there are a few basic things you can do to test it. First, plug the computer in and try to start up the computer. If the computer can start up or shows signs of having power (the hard drives spin up, or the fans turn on) the power supply might be fine, and you may have an issue with your motherboard or RAM. If the computer won't start at all, open the case and then turn the power supply on and attempt to start the computer. Observe the motherboard to see if any lights turn. If no lights turn on and there is no sign that power is being supplied to any of your devices, there's a decent chance that the power supply has burned out. If your computer experiences periodic crashing, feel the case near the power supply to see if it is hotter than normal, and smell the air. If the case is much hotter than normal or you smell burning, your power supply might be overheating, and may be damaged. http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/f/powersupplytest.htm hope this helps

I was burning a movie and my computer flash off than on than shut off.. it spelled like electrical wire burning. now it will not even turn on

Hello,

Sounds like the power supply died. This is where your power cord plugs into the pc. It is a metal box inside the pc. Smell the back of the pc, at the fan opening closest to the power cord. If it smells burnt there, then you need a new power supply.

Hope this helps!

My problem is simple to describe: The computer starts and runs fine, except for the smell...and the heat. The smell resembles burning plastic, and the heat output is noticeably higher. There's no smoke...

It more than likey seems to be your fan if the heat from your tower is noticeably higher and the smell.

If computer still under gaurantee you will be able to get it repaired for free from the manufacturers.

If not, take the tower cover off, and get a hoover and **** all dust particles from the system.

You may also need to invest into another fan, this should stop the smell and also the overheating

Hope this helps and please rate thanks.

Melting plastic smell/ computer slow and shuts down after about 15mins

Hi there.
The reason you can smell burning plastic and why its shutting down after a short time is because its overheating. This can be caused by a build up of dust on the CPU fan, overtime with dust build up computers struggle to keep themselves cool and tend to shut down unexpectedly, chances are this is the problem with your machine, my advice would be to remove the power cord, open the side panel of the computer and clean all the dust away from inside the tower, do this with a soft, clean paintbrush making sure you remove the dust carefully and gently, also make sure the CPU fan and the heat sync behind it is completely free of dust or any other foreign objects.
Once you are happy that its clear of dust, close or return the side panel, plug in the power cord and turn the PC on, you may find that the PC will stay on for longer with the smell dramatically reduced.

Please post back with the results and thanks for using FixYa!!

Gateway GT5014 will not boot.

Ok, this is a mother board issue. the entire mother board seems to be malfunctioning. the blinking amber/green light is confirming this. the mother board may have some fried circuitry and it will have to be replaced in this situation.

I would recommend extracting the mother board and stripping it. look for any discoloring factors that will lead to a burn out location. this will direct you to the necessary repair zone.

Please rate and have a great day:)

Neither the battery or power light comes on when Acer Laptop is plugged in. There is green dust coming out of the plug that goes in the circular yellow plug that gets plugged into the back of the Acer....

Most likely you shorted your power plug on *********** board I would think green dust is burned residue. Smell where you plug your ac plug to and see if it smells like burnt plastic?

Heater exhaust emitting strong odour

sounds to me like you need to have some hardware looked at. Have you tried opening your case and dusting it with a can of compressed air ? If there is a lot of dust there, then it won't allow heat ( and there is a lot of it ) to dissipate. So you want to keep that area relatively clean.

Also, if your powersupply is going bad, it is time to replace. If you are smelling a strong odor, something is burning. You want to figure that out.
