Question about Canon PowerShot SD1000 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Display problem Hello, I've had my SD1000 for less than 3 months. Sometimes the display goes black, I can still access the menu options and if I slide the button to review images they will display on the LCD panel. But even if I've just powered it on, the LCD is black, if I take a picture anyway, the picture is also black. Sometimes if I turn on the camera and turn it off again a few times it starts displaying correctly again. Is there a hardware problem with my camera or is this something I should be able to fix?

We only purchased ours a couple weeks ago-only took 7 pictures so far at home and now we are getting a black screen as well. Definately no drops or damage to it. I can only review photos if I put it in slideshow mode and can't take any new photos.

I've had a Canon SD 1000 for quite sometime now...and it always worked well as I've taken thousands of pictures with it. Recently...my LCD stays black as well...but after awhile...it comes back up and is fine.

    Any thoughts?

I am a tech coordinator for a school that has recently purchased 4 of these cameras and 3 of the 4 are experiencing this exact problem. We have only been using them a few months! Nothing that I have tried has helped.

I've had my SD1000 about 11 months now. The first camera had the problem with the lens not retracting and Canon repaired the problem. About 3 months after receiving the repaired SD1000 I am experiencing the same problem others have listed with the LCD screen blacked out while taking pictures. However, when I view pictures taken they show up fine.

I had the same problem. There are three different ways I've been able to get the display back to normal: 1) charge the battery, 2) press the display button on the lower left, 3) turn the camara off and slap it a few times on the back (as suggested). All three of these techniques have worked at various times.

I had the same problem with my SD1000 and was so frustrated with reading all of the troubleshooting "solutions".... After a couple of days researching, I finally stumbled upon a site that actually suggested turning the unit off and "slapping" it a couple of times (on the front) and that would work. Well, I though "what the hell" and actually tried it. OMG! it actually worked!!! I'm thinking that the shutter inside just got stuck and needed a little "slap" to loosen it up. Hope this finds you all well and works for you before you go our and spend a **** load on getting you camera fixed. See ya!

My Canon PowerShot SD 1000 has this problem: when i turn on the camera, the display is black and i can`t see any image through.Same problem on the video mode. it doesn`t appear any error mesage. i tried to...

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras (including my wife's SD1000, which I have to fix every once in a while with the following easy technique).. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, sometimes with lines, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open). To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help. By the way, for your camera model, I've found it best to just alternate back and forth between opening the battery door while taking a picture, and gently flicking the lens barrel with the tip of my finger. Usually, it only requires a few tries for my wife's camera, then it's good for another couple months.

My camera will no longer show the image on the screen when I am taking a picture with my Canon PowerShot SD1000 digital camera. Can this be fixed or is it time for a new camera?

most likely you have turned the dispaly off. find the display key and turn the screen back on.

another option is to go into the menu, then go to display and set it there.

Lens Error. Restart Camera. Camera gives this error message and then shuts off. I can't access photos or function buttons. What can I do?

Press the "MENU" button and navigate to the reset command and reset the camera. That may get the camera to function properly.

Canon Powershot SD1000: LCD screen display

Hopefully you resolved this already. If not, push the "DISP." button left of the MENU button. Pushing it gives you three options: black (for discreet shooting so your LCD doesn't give garner dirty looks from fellow concert goers), liveview, and liveview with info overlayed (shooting mode, ISO, etc.). Good luck!

Zoom changes when camera turns on and camera is blocked

the only option really for it is service. you do have a 1 year warranty so long as you have a receipt / warranty card. you could just play with the zoom lever a little to see if it frees up
