It is a valve not seating letting a little got back on the intake, Also another thought what octane are you running? This tractor was originally designed to run 92 octane with lead in it. If your running low octane this might be a little spark knock your hearing

I agree it is a intake valve issue,it could be just sticky from setting,or improperly adjusted,or burnt or bad intake valve.

Possibly a timing issue. Check the timing first. Also check the compression to verify both are within spec

SOURCE: it is a 1947 farmall

Two possibilities come to mind:

- the water pump impeller may have so much oxidation on it, it's not pumping enough coolant

- the cooling circuit in the block has so much oxidation in it that it is restricting the coolant flow rate through the block

It's like my arteries, I'm the same age as your tractor, and believe it or not my father once owned that same tractor.

I don't remember, does it have a thermostat? . If it does, you could remove it -- that might help.

What would cause the alternator to run hot on a 1949 farmall cub tractor

Sounds like your still running power thru the original regulator also. Disconnect the original system completely so that your running power directly from alternator's inboard regulator and to the battery. Nowhere else.

Hello Carleton, Fire out of the exhaust port with no pipe is normal. You want to bring the piston to top dead center on the compression stroke. Both valves should be fully closed.

My farmall a will only stay running with the choke fully on. It has no power when in use. Possibilities?

Sounds as if the primary fuel intake inside the carb sounds plugged with either old fuel or junk that got past the fuel filter into the carb. Will require disassembly and thorough cleaning of the carb. I have read of some success with a product called engine med, available on Amazon, that will clean out gummed up fuel systems- with good reviews. I do not have experience with this product.
