Question about Kenmore 3.2 cu. ft. Plus Top Load Washer

Unhinged drum/basin inside washing machine

I am looking for answers regarding how to re-attach (?) the drum inside the washer. It's as if it has come off and now spins wildly during the agitation and spin cycles. Is there a way I can fix this without having to call a plumber?

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

If this is a basic top load, direct drive, it sounds as if the "Drive Block Nut" has come loose and the tub is no longer connected to the drive block OR (hopefully not) the Drive Tube itself has broken.

See the following for how to access the tub and drive block / nut. (You don't have to pull the pump, motor and transmission to check them)

Also see the Whirlpool / Kenmore Service manual for top load, direct drive washers.$FILE/L-55.pdf

You don't have to buy a special spanner wrench ($20) to remove the spanner nut. I've used a short 10" pipe wrench (about $9.00 also good for cracking walnuts) hooked over one of the tabs on the spanner nut, tap the handle with a hammer and it should loosen.

Also, don't directly hit the drive block with a hammer. Use a short piece of wood under the drive block and tap up on the wood.

If the drive tube is broken (or the tabs have broken off) use the above procedures to pull the drive tube and brake in order to replace it.

If this is a basic top load, direct drive machine, they are relatively easy to fix if you are comfortable with basic tools (socket set, pliers, screwdriver). Being somewhat of a clutz, I've even torn the complete transmission down on one of these without any problem.

The wash basin is hitting against the side if the machine

Check the inside for a broken suspension damper.
Typically you can tilt the machine back and look underneath.

When i spin wash tub wigth my hand i can hear lots of water still in the machine under neath the wash basin

That is becouse most washing machines are made up of an inside drum where your clothes are washed and an outside durm that catches the water when the washer spins the water out of the washed clothes. A pump is connected to the bottom of the outside drum. If the pump fails, the water would not get pumped to the drain and would collect in the outside drum.

Bad sound when the washer goes into it's spin cycle

Your drum spider bracket broke. You will need to replace the complete drum assembly. The drum assembly will cost about $325 just for the part. If you can replace it on you own it will save you alot of money. To repalce the drum assembly you will need to completely disassemble the machine. If this is the route you want to go. I can walk you thru the process. Just let me know. Jeff

When washer spins it seems to be off kilter the drum bangs the sides

Check the vibration damper rods for firm mount, and also the springs at the bottom of the basin.

Rusting basin

If you still have your book, look in the warranty section. The baskets on most models are covered 5 or 10 years against rust. That covers the part but not labor.($130-$160) If the rest of the machine is in good condition, it would probably be worth it. If you don't have your book, look up your specific model on the Whirlpool website and you should be able to find the warranty info. If it is no longer covered, the repair cost would probably not be worth it.
