Since I could not find the fault and the new HP ac adaptor was very expensive I made a dual voltage ac adaptor with transformer and regulated DC o/p. It cost me much less and till date Its working just fine.
( The all expensive HP original adaptor was available with just 3 months warranty.)

Amp turns on but puts out no sound except for faint noise which dies out after a few seconds.

It sounds like a defective/incorrect AC-to-DC adapter may have caused your problem. These adapter come with different output voltages, AC or DC output and different amperage ratings. AC-to-DC adapters list the polarity of the DC voltage as it relates to the DC power plug and you must match both the devices voltage and power requirements. As for the amp...not working on batteries either, I would suspect output transistors or IC.

My remote speaker system works with the batteries but not with the AC adaptor plugged in to the speaker.

I would suggest to check AC outlet first where adaptor is pluged in,if Ok measure output voltage from adaptor to see if there is any (using any voltage multimeter with AC/DC)
Check label on adaptor shold be writen AC or DC output ,and value 3V,6,9,12,24,48 etc...
If adaptor is ok then problem is power jack mounted in to the speaker (cold solder joints' or damage)

Plug in your power cord from the laptop to an electrical outlet. Your battery is dead and/or needs recharged.

COMPAQ V2000 WILL NOT POWER UP WITH DC/ADAPTER OR BATTERY

Hve u tried a differnt adaptor , the adaptor might be blown too ,try replacing the adaptor , also check for the power cord if it has any kinks in it which may be interrupting the power supply , since the adaptor 18.5 v 3.5 a is the most common of all hp adaptors u should find one to try .

Lightning strike ac adaptor is fried

Your phone did expirence a surge that probably blew the ac adaptor which happens most of the time, u can buy one of those universal adaptors and look on the back of the old adaptor for the output voltage it will usually read between 3 and 8 volts DC.Set the universal adAptor voltage to the setting right below the voltage output on the back of the ac adaptor.
