Question about Jura Capresso 556 Stainless Steel Electric Burr Grinder

Open Question

Capresso Jura-Capresso 585.05 Disk Burr Grinder won't start

I thought this may be due to it being clogged so I unlocked the grinding disk and cleaned that out. I also cleared the chute to the best of my ability but when I plug it in to grind beans, it does nothing.

SOURCE: severe clogging

Try using long grain white rice works better than minute rise, if that does not help, then the burrs need to be replaced on grinder.

SOURCE: Motor revs but grinder does not engage.

Hi,
I am what you would call an expert when it comes to Baratza repairs.
The problem you are describing is not an unusual one. It sounds like the main drive gear has been stripped due to something foreign (likely a stone) sneaking into your grinder with the beans. It would have jammed the burrs, and because of the powerful torque from the motor, the drive gear has been stripped so it will no longer (or rarely) engage the burrs.

To solve this problem you will need to contact COAG Ltd (if you live in Canada) or Baratza if you are from the US. If you machine is still under warranty (less than a year old) this repair will be free of charge and you shouldn't be parted from your grinder for long.

I hope this helps anyone who stumbles upon this and finds themselves with the same problem.
Kind Regards
Emily

SOURCE: the upper burr stuck upside down!

Yes, this butter knife trick is the way that Capresso customer service recommends. Just to clarify the tip of the butter knife is the only portion inserted...DO NOT shove the entire blade into the grinder. Just the tip in the furthest to the right side of the "smiley face ****" that is on the top of the grinder without the clear plastic hopper. just imagine a birds eye view. Once you have the tip of the butter knife all the way to the right of the "smiley face ****" then just rotate counter-clockwise until it does not go any further. This should have dislodged the top part of the grinding cone and then simply pick it up with your fingers, flip 180 and put it in the correct way.

SOURCE: Because it seemed to be

The manufacturer never made any parts available means the manufacturer never released any exploded views either. No need to create/publish parts diagrams if no parts are going to be sold. Sorry.

As far as your lost ball bearing, you may be most successful at a bicycle store. They commonly handle loose ball bearing and, if they are good, should be able to measure one for you and sell you a replacement. Most hardware stores only sell bearings that are sealed or in a set (cage). Most autoparts stores are also limited to cage bearing sets.

Good luck getting it back together. However, if it needed to be taken apart and the manufacturer views the product as "disposable" (since they don't sell parts), then you might want to limit your anger and losses and just buy a replacement grinder.

check to see if the grinder is jammed. Most likely, there was something that's gotten caught in it, and jammed the mechanism.

I took everything apart to give it a good cleaning and now all settings produce a very fine grind. Any thoughts?

I had the same problem with too fine a grind when I took mine completely apart to clean (including the lower burr). The solution I finally came around to was to further tighten the star-shaped screw which holds the lower burr assembly in place. I had originally just tightened it until the lower burr until the lower burr assembly started to turn with the screw, but that wasn't enough. So I held the assembly in place and tightened the screw further and I'm back to my previous grind coarseness/fineness.

Does not grind

Get near a person you want to grind with. Keep in mind that many people may be uncomfortable grinding with someone they do not know. If the person takes notice of you, and acknowledges you, approach them and ask if they'd like to dance. Never ask if they'd like to grind. If you know for sure the person is a grinder, assume the correct positions (one person, usually the guy, directly behind the other). If you are unsure, start off with some distance between your hips. If your partner starts getting a little closer, then you can get a little closer. Don't forget a person is not going out to sleep so do your thing

Hmm, I have Capresso Infinity Burr Grinder #560, and I accidentally placed the upper burr back in upside down. Now it is stuck. I do not see the "black section with a long slot" around the blade.

Yes! I had the same issue with putting the burr in upside down and then twisting it an effectively "locking" it in there incorrectly. I tried the "knife" solution that worked for some people here, but it was placing the bean container back on and twisting counter clockwise that did the trick!

So glad I found this thread and didn't give up trying to fix my burr grinder (which we love).

Thanks to jaybayca!

I accidentally placed the upper burr in upside down. Now it is wedged in and I can't get it out. Any suggestions?

I've posted this in a few other places on this site (there are many ways to ask the same question), but try putting the clear bean container back on and untwisting as if to unlock it -- the problem isn't just that we put the upper burr in upside down, but then we locked it into place with the bean container. My Jura S9's grinding unit clogged (due to Peete's beans)

Usually water in the grounds container is caused by the coffee solenoid valve return side being blocked from dry coffee. Using cleaning tubelets to clean the coffee grounds out. If that doesn't work then you should remove the solenoid and clean it out with warm water. If that still doesn't rid you of the wet grinds you should have a certified repair tech take a look at it. You may end up having to replace the solenoid but that should be verified by a tech before you spend the money.

Grind setting

This grinder is really pretty crappy, I have the same one. If you want anything less coarse, you will have to grind it multiple times. My Grandmother tried using this and it ended up spitting out a few half and whole beans even after grinding. The best you would end up getting would be a drip coffee grind. Check this out, it might help understand the problem: http://www.epinions.com/content_143707967108
