It would appear that your Garmin has no clue as to where it is on the planet. I think a trip to the owner's manual:

http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/GPSMAP178CSounder_OwnersManual.pdf

might be your best bet to help initialize your unit. The info on how to graphically initialize your Garmin can be found on page 5.

Hope this is helpful.
Good Luck!

Update the software to the most current version. This was a known bug that was fixed in a software update

SOURCE: My Garmin GPSMAP 178C screen backlight failed

Backlight problem: Remove the display, remove the light tube from behind the LCD. Buy a led panel from Ebay for around $5 and install it behind the LCD under the drfusing layers. Run the wires out to a 12 VDC source and there you have it.

My gps has been of for a while now its locked on last location how do i reset as its not picking up sattelites

try this for Garmin GPSMap 178C

Unable to acquire satellites with a GPSMAP 172/178
There could be a few causes of the device not acquiring satellites. If the device has moved a large distance since the last time it has acquired satellites or has been turned off for longer than a few weeks or months, the device may not be able to acquire the satellites correctly.
The first troubleshooting step is to perform an Auto Locate procedure. This procedure will clear the device's memory of previous satellite information, and try to download new information.
Note: This will not clear any user data like waypoints, routes, and tracks.
To perform the Auto Locate procedure, please follow these steps:
  1. Start with the device powered OFF
  2. Press and hold the Page button and Power ON the device
  3. Continue to hold both the Page and Power button until the I Agree button is highlighted in the lower right corner of the screen
  4. Press the Enter button
The device should now switch to the GPS satellite screen. Leave the device in clear view of the sky for at least 10-20 minutes to acquire satellites. If the device acquires the satellites before 20 minutes, the device can be used or powered off.
If the Auto Locate procedure does not correct the issue, the next step is to update the internal operating software of the device to the latest version. Please refer to the related FAQ for more information.

GPSMAP 178C Sounder GPS Receiver: My 178C will not stay powered up. I just replaced ...

I had the same problem with mine. It is caused by a crimped wire on the internal harness inside the machine. I opened it up and discovered that when originally put together 3 of the wires from the plug were crimped. One was broken off. The only way to fix it is to open it up, restrip the wires place a piece shrink wrap on before you solder it back and then make the shrink wrap flush with the back of the plug and heat her up. And, Voila... no more intermittent operation. Hope this helps? John

Garmin 178c turns off on it's own.

Hi

Sounds very much like the wiring plug connections in the back, always overlooked but so important that connections are tight and contacting.

Garmin 178C Boots up then shuts off

Check the pins at the connector on the back of your unit. Make sure one of them is not bent or broken off. One of the pins on mine is missing about 1/16" of the tip. My boat repair shop says it's the power lead, but Garmin wants $200 for a generic repair.
