Question about Water Heaters

1 Answer

I need to find a manual for my truck mount carpet cleaning machine. It says ''prochem performer'' in big letters on the front, and slightly below and to the right of those words says ''Bruin'' with a little picture of a bear. next to the serial number, it says: Model: Bruin I've found many manuals for both ''prochem performer'' and ''bruin II'', but those are not the same machines.

Some how your question got posted in the plumbing section under water heaters. I am a plumber and do not think I would be qualified to answer your question, but you may want to repost it under another heading. Hope this helps.

Bissell is getting old?
You might need heavy duty wand that pushes tight into carpet.
The bissell does not push down hard enough against carpet and probably doesn't have enough power?

1. do you have limescale in your source water, if yes you need to clean your machine with a special product that can be found in the market.
2. pressure sensor is broken
3. inlet filter is dirty you can unscrew the inlet pipe and look for a small filter and clean it.

Hi,

I was able to locate a manual for your unit.

See the link below:

http://demandware.edgesuite.net/aabh_prd/on/demandware.static/Sites-Appliance-Site/Sites-CompactAppliance_Primary/default/v1300218722880/pdf/ownersmanuals/rheem/RTG74IndoorOutdoor_owners.pdf

Then see page 33. The error code you describe is not specifically listed, and the manual advises that you call their customer service number for further assistance. This is the text for customer assistance:

Manufacturer's National Service Department at the following address:

2600 Gunter Park Drive

Montgomery, Alabama 36109-1413

Phone: 1-800-432-8373.

When contacting the manufacturer, the following information will be requested:

b. Address where the water heater is located and physical location.

c. Name and address of installer and any service agency who performed service on the water heater.

d. Date of original installation and dates any service work was performed.

I HAVE A RELIANCE 630 DORT( 40 GALLON) THAT IS ONLY GIVING ABOUT ONE MINUTE OF HOT WATER AND AN ELECTRICIAN THAT JUST WANTS TO CHANGE PARTS. HOW COULD I TEST THE DIFFERENT OPTIONS BEFORE I JUST START...

Reliance is AO Smith company
http://www.aosmith.com/OperatingUnits/Detail.aspx?id=138&ekmensel=c580fa7b_12_0_138_3

Age of water heater is on serial number located on label on side of tank. First digit is letter, next two digits are the year. So C04 is 2004. Label also shows wattage of elements inside tank.

606 water heater at Reliance
http://www.reliancewaterheaters.com/prod/e-606.html

PDF spec sheet below shows your tank takes 4500 watt element.
I buy ordinary screw-in type 4500 watt elements for $20 at Lowes, I can't remember price exactly because they're inexpensive.
http://www.reliancewaterheaters.com/lit/spec/electric/R606E0510.pdf

Typical 606 manual:
http://www.reliancewaterheaters.com/lit/om/manuals/185761-000.pdf
Shows element and cleaning/replacement page 20.
We know your lower element is burned out because plumber checked and said problem is element.
We know upper element is working because you have some hot water.
If upper element is bad, then tank has no hot water.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-it-works.html

Photo from manual shows typical element that I buy at Lowes or hardware store:
Manual does not mention special element required.
Your element burned out probably because sediment is built up inside tank, and not because stock elements are inferior.
Is your electrician/plumber also going to clean sediment out of tank?
Changing element and cleaning sediment will restore full efficiency to your tank.

Here are step-by-step images that show do-it-yourself, so you can see if this is correct project for you:

Page shows how to drain tank, replace element, and has links to troubleshooting if you want to test parts and learn more about your water heater.

1 Answer

How do I change the heating element on my 50 gallon electric Reliance 501 hot water heater? Where can I get the heating elements?

Buy elements at local hardware store or home center, like Lowes
Look at label on side of tank.
Label shows element wattage.
Element is also printed on end of element in tiny letters-numbers.
Typical elements are 4500 and 5500 watts.
Tank needs 10 gauge wire and 30 amp breaker for 5500 watt element.

Water heaters are fully repairable by homeowner.

1) Have you tested water heater to see if element is problem? You need cheap multi-meter from Home Depot.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-troubleshoot-electric-problems-with-water-heater.html

2) To change element
a) turn off power
b) drain water from drain valve ... once it starts draining, loosen element slightly while tank still has weight to hold against you turning element wrench.
Here's what to do if water heater won't drain:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-heater-will-not-drain.html
c) open covers on tank, remove element using element-wrench from hardware store or home center.
If element won't come out:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-remove-old-water-heater-element.html
d) Clean out tank if needed.
e) Replace element.
f) Fill tank entirely with water before turning on power or element will burn out.
g) Once tank is filled, and water flows steady out of tub spout, turn on power.
Each steps above is shown on following link:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-clean-sediment-out-of-electric-water-heater.html

3) You need to buy some things:
Screw-in type (not bolt-in type) Element that matches wattage on tank label. New Element comes with washer.
Inexpensive Element wrench.
Inexpensive multimeter if you are going to test parts first.
Some pieces of pipe and hose if tank sediment needs to be cleaned out.
Washing machine hose if tank will not drain (return after job is done).

4) Also:
You need flat tip and phillips screwdriver.
Lighting to work on tank
Some WD-40 if element is stuck in place.
Garden hose to drain tank.
Shop vac and duct tape if you need to vacuum out sediment.
Tarp to protect floor and carpet
Maybe a knife to cut back insulation on wire if wire is burned at element.

Web links above go through entire process step by step.

Is there a reset button on the GSW Series 5 Water Heater? If so, where? Also, am trying to drain heater to flush & can't find where to initate it. There's suppose to be somewhere (there's already a...

GSW Series 5 water heater is electric water heater.

http://www.gsw-wh.com/index.php?context=/products/waterproducts/gsw/electric/standard
The link above goes to the GSW page, but the manual does not match the product shown in photo

GSW has a phone number in the manual:
1-888-479-8324

I cannot see the manual, but I might be able to help.
Every electric water heater has a red reset button located on the thermostat.
Normally on a two-element thermostat, the ECO or reset button is located behind the upper panel.
Your water heater seems to have a box located where upper panel is located.
Without the manual, I do not know what functions are performed by this box.
If there is a thermostat setting on the face of the box, then maybe there is also a red reset button.

That being said, you want to drain your water heater.
The GSW water heater has a drain valve.
If the valve is plastic, rotate the knob counterclockwise.
If the valve is brass, use a screwdriver to rotate stem counterclockwise
geno_3245_10.jpg
The photo shows the screwdriver slot for brass drain valve

If your water heater will not drain, it is probably clogged with sediment at the tank bottom.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-heater-will-not-drain.html
Connect a washing machine hose to drain valve.
Connect garden hose to outdoor spigot, and to washing machine hose.
Turn on outdoor spigot for 10 seconds and this will open the clog.
Repeat procedure if clog is still there.

If your water heater is clogged with sediment, you will want to clean out the water heater:
Follow the step by step on link below:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-clean-sediment-out-of-electric-water-heater.html
