Sounds like you need to take off the float bowl and clean the bowl and the inlet valve. make sure when the bowl drops the gas will flow in smoothly

18 hp twin 2 modle# 42a707 type 2238e1 rpm revs up & down

Typically it is dirty passages inside the carburetor. Basically fuel flow is slightly restricted so the carb is working outside of its normal calibration - the governor is not controlling well outside the normal calibration. This is most common after long winter of no use.
I use carburetor cleaner. I carefully disassemble things like the fuel bowl (preserving the gaskets) and spray cleaner down the jets, through every air passage etc. (there are small air bleed holes in the carb venturi). Wear eye protection because it will squirt back at you sometimes!
Mixture screws... Screw them all the way in, counting how many turns until they bottom out. Then screw them all the way out and remove them. Spray cleaner down there as well. Re-assemble screws by bottoming them out and backing out the number of turns you counted.
Never use drills or wires to clean out passages on a carburetor. Hard metals will wear on soft brass fittings. Carburetors are calibrated! Carb cleaner in a spray can is relatively safe.

It will run 100% better (and start better as well).

Next time use fuel stabilizer (I put it in every tank because I can never predict when the 'last' time I will use it will be).

Carb wont pump gas

If gravity feed works to the fuel line on the carburetor, then the fuel pump is bad. Repair or replace fuel pump. I am looking for fuel resistant sealant to repair fuel pump diaphragms. Has anyone tried Permatex 85420 or something else to achieve this? My application is antique and the part is no longer available at a reasonable cost.

Bike wont idol below 2 grand

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Almost always, the described idling problem would be a carb issue. The carbs set has to be pulled down, fully dis-assembled, all non-rubber parts soaked in carb cleaner and cleaning be done specially on the jets and pin holes.

In some instances high idle could be caused by a vacuum leak in any of the rubber coupling between the carbs and the intake manifolds.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

My Briggs 18 hp v-twin is starved for fuel. It

A more likely cause is a clogged jet in the carb.

Remove disassemble and clean Carb, the High speed idle jet is clogged.

If you had a fuel pump problem it would not run even in the Choke mode.

This tends to happen when an engine sets for long periods of time with out a fuel inhibitor id is even more likely to happen if you use fuel with ethanol.

Hope this tip helps.

Fuel Starvation - Float Bowl Carburetor
1) remove air filter assembly
*be cautious of tearing the mounting gasket. If it does tear, you HAVE to replace it. It is part of the priming system
2) remove the float bowl fastener. This is the main jet
3) carefully remove the float bowl, the rubber o-ring/gasket will not be able to be used if it is removed, you WILL have to replace it
4) using a spray 'carb cleaner'
spray up thru the center of the carburetor
spray and clean the main jet with cleaner and 'tag' wire
(tag wire is very thin, and can be used to clean the hole in the center of the main jet)
5) clean any debris from inside the bowl or carb body
6) re-install bowl and center bolt, air filter assembly

*if you need gaskets, your Briggs dealer can supply. The kit is cheaper than individual gaskets, and all the parts needed to finish the above repair are in the kit.

Need carburetor adjustment

I had a similar problem with my 23 hp briggs. While cleaning the carb I found that the great gas we get today had eaten the seal around one of the jets in the throttle body causing it to fall out. Replaced the jet and now runs like a champ. Hope this helps.
