I would use the instant unit for a secondary unit to a large conventional heater, 40 gal min, gas or electric. They are both about the same now, but when the power goes out, you might not have the pump running, but you will have hot water! And whether it is a secondary or a primary water source, you will have a hot supply feeding it just in case. We have 2 people in the house, and a 30 gallon unit, and it is not big enough. The 40 gallon tank worked great. Hope this helps.

The problem is not the water heater. The shower has a mixer or a limiter built into the plumbing so that the water wont get hot. It is a safety feature to prevent burns and protect children from scalding.

I have a Paloma PTG 42 PVN Cold water turns unit off

Inside the unit there is an electrical " gap switch " like an off/on switch, if this is not set right to yr water pressure it will not work correctly. Take the front of the unit off, find the switch which is usually in the front area at the bottom where the cold water goes in, and ajust the screw on the side, suggest you open it a 1/2 turn at a time to increase the flow valve, and see if that is yr problem. cheers

Before calling service technician, open following link for troubleshooting resources, including possible manual, and Rheem chat.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Troubleshoot-Rheem-Tankless-water-heater.html
Rheem usually asks you to call local service technician.

There are many factors that cause problem you describe: bad PC board, sensor problem, loose wires, crossover in single-handled faucet, lime build-up in heat exchanger, clogged water filter.
The remote control might give you an error code. Error code is a starting point for troubleshoot.
Error code on one unit can have different cause than same error code on different unit.

Read manual for required maintenance.
Tankless require yearly maintenance.

Ok i intall tankless water heaters and sell them and repair them . The trouble your are hving is more than likely ,the mixing valve on your shower has a ajustment on it to prevent you from burning your self . that is the number one reason in showers when water never get to temp . What it is doing is addng cold water to your shower for you bummer . Take handle off and adjust water temp to your hottest setting . Some times you have to remove the low flow washer in shower head to get the right flow . also every time you start up your hot water it shouldbe set all the way ot other wise withe the battery 2 D models the unit will not sence flow and shut off the unit ,with some units it is a fine balancing act to get them adjusted right. If your buying a tankless water heater always buy a blower type unit that has a computer that runs it . You will be happy . If the Battery operated unit is for a cottage or a smallcabin then your just going to have to fix the pumbing to make it work right many of the safety features of the newer showers are not made to work well with tankless water heaters .

Water heats, then turns cold

These units need lots of flow to start and run. Set the temp on the unit lower and the people in the shower will have to use more hot and less cold which will make the unit more stable.

Rinnai XR 20 - water temperature varies hot - cold - hot etc during 4 to 5 min shower

your gas supply may be to low to keep the unit firing while you are showering...especially if you have other gas appliances running while you are using the unit.

If this is happening after someone else has recently used the unit....then it may be a problem that some call stacking. The unit works on flow....not sure about that unit but they usually take between 1/2 - 3/4 gallon to turn the burner on. If someone recently used it and then you get in the shower...you will get the hot that is already in the line but then it takes that initial amount to fire again, thus loading the pipe with cold water.....it then comes out on you followed by the hot that has finally entered the line. Once it is past that point there should be no issue, unless it it a gas problem like I mentioned.

My thermostatic concealed shower valve only gives either boiling hot water or cold water, there is no inbetween temperature? the cold is fed from mains and the hot from a combi boiler. the plumber has said...

Hi,

If the hot and cold are fitted the wrong way round then the thermostat on the shower unit cannot operate properly!

Most thermostatic mixer showers have a 'bi-metallic' thermostat, if you supply the hot to the cold and vice versa IT WILL NOT WORK.

It is like wearing the left shoe on the right foot and the right on the left! It doesn't work.

Re-install the hot and cold to the correct supply, and this will sort it.

I hope this helps.
