I can't type in numbers or do simple calculations, it shows up as ERR:MEMORY, and the box that shows up is no longer solid but light and checkered.

Apparently your memory is full. Press 2ND [MEM] 2. How much RAM is free (top line of the screen)?

If there isn't much, try deleting some things to free up memory. Press 1 to select "All" and see if there's anything you can do without.

ERR: MEM when trying to do Z-test/T-test

If you get Memory Error its meaninig that memory is insufficient to perform the instruction or function. You must delete items from memory
before executing the instruction or function.
Recursive problems return this error; for example,
graphing the equation Y1=Y1.
Branching out of an If/Then, For(, While, or Repeat
loop with a Goto also can return this error because
the End statement that terminates the loop is never
reached.

I get ERR: DATA TYPE

Error Data Type mean that you entered a value or variable that is the wrong data type:
• For a function (including implied multiplication)
or an instruction, you entered an argument that
is an invalid data type, such as a complex
number where a real number is required. See
Appendix A and the appropriate chapter.
• In an editor, you entered a type that is not
allowed, such as a matrix entered as an element
in the stat list editor. See the appropriate
chapter.
• You attempted to store an incorrect data type,
such as a matrix, to a list.

My ti-84 calculator show unreadable code only?

Honestly, I do not understand what you mean. This calculator is designed to run commands one after the other. You may stack a few of them only if you do not need the output of the first ones.
Anyway, the memory is limited and that includes the register where the current line is stored. If you enter too many characters, the calculator stops accepting them and the cursor will change shape.

If memory is full you can no longer do anything. One simple way to regain some working memory (RAM) is to clear entries (the commands you typed). Press [2nd] [+] to enter memory managem2nt and select the command ClearEntries. You can also select ClearAllLists, or Reset. For the last choice you can then choose to reset ALL RAM.

My TI-84 cursor will not allow me to type anything

If the cursor is not allowing you to type anything that means either the calculator available memory is full or that you have exceeded the number of characters in a single command.
Clear calculator memory or just clear all entries (history) or split a complicated command into multiple shorter commands.

According to the manual, this indicates that either the maximum number of characters have been entered at a prompt or memory is full.

I entered and calculated data in L1 now when I try to graph the data i get an err: invalid dim Here are the steps that I took: 2nd Stats Plots enter Plot1 On Type: Box Plot XList: L1 Freq:...

If you have a frequency list it must be entered in a statistical list, L2, L3, ...or L6.
If the frequency of all elements is 1 you do not need to enter the frequency in a list. When you go to draw the box plot, the frequency will be set to 1.

The cursor blinks as a checkered black square and keys don't work

Hi,
The memory of the calculator is ful,l that is why you cannot enter anything anymore. You must clear the RAM of the calculator.
Press [2nd][MEM][7:Reset][1:All Ram][2:Reset][ENTER]. Press CLEAR to clear the Ram Cleared Message.
If that does not work, pull the main batteries out of calculator and leave them out for a while (a few hours). Then reinsert them.
