Hi,
There could be Few Things :-
1. If the Lamp has not been Replaced for the Last ONE year, it would be a suspect.
2. As there is a Pop Sound, i have mostly seen it, if the Color Wheel is at Fault.
3.Sometimes, Ballast is at Fault.
Other than this, there are Few Other Reasons.
I would Certainly Recommend a Tech to Diagnose rather than Purchasing these. These TV's have High Voltage, even while Unplugged. I usually do not Advise, unless you have TV Repair Experience to Inspect, Test and Replace Component.
The Reason i mentioned 3 Reasons, - Pop Sound is Usually with Color Wheel. But, Intermittent On and Off Problem is with Lamp. In your Case, it is Both. So, we need to check all these Components, Switches. Wiring, Power Supply to make sure that there is no other Fault.
Let me know,if needed further assistance.
Hope i helped you.
Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!
I have a few questions if you can please answer:
1) How long since the lamp was replaced?
2) When the set works to you hear anything unusual like a fan like or high pitched whine?
Let me know as much as you can as the more you can tell me the better the chance that I can solve your problem.

Yes, allow it takes a few minutes for me to get your comment.
Life span on the lamps is less than 2,000 hours and this normally means 18 months for the average user.
I would suspect the lamp. They way these sets all work is the set develops about 14,000 volts to fire the lamp up and the two wires that look like spark plug wires deliver it.
Someone may have to look at the lamp as the set turns on to see if the pop is coming from it, there is not much else in the set that will cause a pop you can hear.

Usually answered in minutes!
No no noise is made when it is on. No the lamp has never been replaced, its not that old.
Will I get a reply to my questions when I ask them?
Can a person replace the lamp themselves or does it have to taken to be fixed?
