Trevor_jody, I hope you have valid HP warranty! If not , then you will need to do some reading at this blog: http://www.lesliewong.us/blog/2005/05/02/hp-pavilion-f1703-flat-panel-display-blackout-solution/ The cheapest way to fix is DIY. But you and only you can determine if you are able to do the required work necessary to refurbish the unit. Swap-in a good unit to use while you are researching the common fixes for your 2338h unit. Your unit still works!!! Just not long enough! Your goal is to make it work for 20 million seconds. Try these other web sites also. www.ccl-la.com/badcaps.htm (site run by "buddymc") and www.badcaps.net , www.lcdparts.net Next thing to do will be to understand the "flashlight test" to determine state of your monitor's "switch-mode-power-supply". Is it in full or partial shutdown mode when screen goes BLACK or BLANK and BLACK? If you can still see Win-desktop after screen goes black, then SMPS is in partial shutdown mode. Blank n black=full shutdown. Do some reading in my and "buddymc" and "budmrtn" fixya profiles by typing our fixya "nicknames" into the "search for solutions or.... " bar at top of fixya screen and then hit enter or click search button. You will also find DIY video clips at YOUTUBE that will also be of some use too!! All that we ask you to do after doing your research is to come back to fixya and tell us if we were of some help and that you have learned something about how your monitor functions and if you have been able to make the decision to DIY or contract out the work needed to restore your unit to like-new condition. Bye for now. 12fixlouie

trevor_jody, 12fixlouie here. By any chance, have you connected your 2338h to a known good pc running Windows XP to see if monitor still acts as if it is going to sleep? Try that before you do anything else. What version of Windows are you using? Have you done any software upgrade lately? 12fixlouie

Trevor_jody, If your 2338h is just past the warranty period, at least give a call to HP and complain about "premature CCFL backlight failure" and see if they can do a swapout for a rehabed (refurbished) unit for you. Try that first before you do an inspection inside of your unit. Worth a try?? Best of luck to you. 12fixlouie

Hp2338h monitor goes to sleep all the time. When turned on it displays for a couple of seconds, then message flashes that its going to sleep. Its a not graphics driver board or power saver setting,...

I've seen on a few Windows 7 machines has been the display turning off after only 15 minutes, even though I set the Turn off the Display option to Never. Weird!
You're probably reading this because you've tried changing the power plan settings to Never for everything and your monitor still turns off! This can be very frustrating and usually occurs with new installs of Windows 7, though I've seen it happen on older installs too.
In this article, I'll go through the different ways you can fix this problem. Note that if your computer is on, but the screen is showing No Signal or No Input, you should read my post on fixing blank or black screens. Now let's go through the possible solutions.
Power Options - Control Panel First, we need to make sure everything is set correctly in Power Options. Click on Start and type in power options or go to Control Panel (icon view) and then open Power Options from there.
Click on Start, then Control Panel and then Hardware and Sound, and then click on Power Options.

Click on the Change plan settings link that is next to the plan that is currently selected. In my case, the High Performance plan is selected, so I'll click on the link next to it.

First, make sure that Put the computer to sleep is set to Never. Next, change the Turn off the display setting to whatever value you want it 10,15 min etc.. You don't have to set it to Never if you don't want to. After this, click on the Change advanced power settings link.

Expand Hard disk and then expand Turn off hard disk after. Reduce the value till it gets to Never. Click OK and then click Save Changes on the Edit Plan Settings page.
Screen Saver - Control Panel The second setting you want to check is the screen saver. Go to Control Panel, click on Personalization, and then click on Screen Saver at the bottom right.

Make sure the setting is set to None. Sometimes if the screen saver is set to Blank and the wait time is 15 minutes, it'll look like your screen has turned off.

BIOS, Graphics Card, Monitor The two methods above are the most common reason why your display will turn off after a set amount of time, however, there can be other possible causes.
BIOS - On some computers, the BIOS can have power saving settings that determine how the computer sleeps. These are called sleep modes (S1, S2, S3, S4, and S5). On some computers, you'll see an option called Deep Sleep Control. You may need to disable this in order for the computer to wake up faster.
Graphics Card - If you have a high-end graphics card installed, make sure you have the latest driver and management software installed. If you go through the settings, you may find an option that puts your graphics card into lower power mode or something similar.

Monitor - Lastly, some monitors have power saving features themselves. Usually, the monitor is supposed to go into power saving mode if it doesn't detect any input (HDMI, VGA, DVI, etc), but sometimes it happens unexpectedly.

You'll have to press the buttons on the monitor to get access to the monitor settings. Those are about all the reasons I could think of for your display turning off when it shouldn't. If you have any other questions please post them here ,Best

Monitor going right to sleep mode on start up

Sounds like a bad graphics card. Try using monitor wit another computer and see if the problem still exists. This rules out the display.

LCD monitor goes blank

It appears that the display resolution set in your display properties is out of the range that the LCD can display.

Try this.

Boot to the ENABLE VGA MODE by pressing F8 to get the Windows Boot Menu. If you can get to the desktop, then go to display properties, and see if you can change the resolution to higher settings and maintain video. (If the video blanks out, then it should revert to the previous setting in 15 seconds)
