I have two compaq notebooks with the same problem (2 different modles). Here is my problem - when I turn them on they shut right back off ( they stay on for about 3 sec.) What could be wrong?

This is possibly because of over heating problem.
u didn't mention how much time happened from purchase.
if you know how to open your notebook , open it and you can see dust on your CPU heatsink Fan you just have to remove that dust from there .

my suggestion is not to do anything at home because you might not have enough tools for laptop repairing so kindly go to any technician so that he can open and remove dust from your fan

and if you still want to do it your self

1 you will find two hoocks at the point where our screen is joint with base nit

    search how to open it

2 under them you might find screw

    3 remove them

4 now u can open your key board buts its fitting is tricky one so be care full

5 under that uou can see heatsink fan unit for your processor

6 remove dust from that unit and re assemble your laptop

but again my suggestion is same go to any technician

once you see that then you can do it on your own but for first time it is not advisable to do it on your own

1. If the notebook computer is running solely on battery power, plug the AC adapter into the notebook.
2. Shut down the computer if it is running.
3. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
4. Press f10 when the HP/Compaq logo displays.
5. After the BIOS Setup Utility displays, use the Right Arrow key to select the Diagnostics menu.
6. Select HDD Self-Test options .
7. Press enter to display a list of HDD/Self-Test options.
8. Select Notebook Hard Drive and then press f10 to display an Estimated test time .
9. Press f10 to continue. The Hard Drive Self Test executes a Quick test , a Comprehensive test, and a SMART test.
If test reports pass then perform installation of OS
else hard drive has gone bad

My laptop compaq 6735s will only stay on for a few minutes before shutting itself off and not working for a long time. Also, the area where the port is for the laptops charger get's exteremely hot. I don't...

This sounds like *********** board is overheating due to probably dust and fan not working properly. Try using air can to blow some of the stuff of off the fan from the bottom of the laptop but make sure you dont tip the can over while doing this because the air turns in to ice and it will mess up you laptop. If just blowing air don't work then you have to open it and clean it up.Hope this helps.

Not sure I bought a used compaq armada e 500. it

Maybe, however there are a few things you can do to stablize the computer.First of all the system fan and the vents needs to be cleaned, secondly you need to put thermal grease between the processor and the heat sink. This should stop the computer from shutting down.As for the system time you can check the cmos battery or change it.
Good luck

It wont stay on

Hi Kimberley,
Looking at your brief description of the problem a possible fault may lie with power supply and or battery.
Have you access to another Armada power supply? if not does the light go green when Pc is turned off and fully charged.
I would be looking in these area's for the problem.
Good Luck,

Wont charge

It could be that your battery is defective/worn out. If the computer just shuts off immediately (doesnt try to hibernate/standby) then you're likely looking at replacing the battery. They can suddenly do things like this if a cell shorts out in the battery or due to common wear. But first, here are a couple of things you can try.

1. Try reseating the battery (pull it out and put it back in). Sometimes something that simple can fix the problem.
2. Try to calibrate the battery. Your computer may come with instructions on how to do this, but if not you can do it manually. Turn the computer on but go into BIOS (press F10 at the compaq logo screen). Don't load your operating system
Unplug your computer. If it turns off at this point, your battery is already toasted. Replace it.
If the computer keeps running, let it go until it finally shuts off due to battery drain. Then plug it back in and let it recharge completely. This will let the microchip in the battery learn its charge potential and may allow you to get more life out of it.

Note: Calibrating these batteries is good practice but it shouldn't be done very often. If your calibration doesn't work after 1 or 2 tries, you probably still are looking at a dead battery.
