Engine wont stay running

Recently i had to replace the fuel lines in my toro 2-stroke trimmer.

I think i may have used a line that had to small of an inner dimension causing it to be fuel starved.

CAn you tell me what that dimension is supposed to be?

Ok so if the fuel lines are connected correctly, what would cause the engine to stall out after 2-3 minutes of use.

Could it be caused by incorrect spark plug or even incorrect gap on spark plug?

  • 1windowpimp May 07, 2010

Is the coil a replaceable item?.. Thats sound alot like what is happening? kinda hard to start but once it starts it runs like a champ for about 3- minutes and dies...... Then wont start until several hours later.

Make sure you hooked the lines up correctly. If the line you use fit the connections it should be okay. I have a sample sketch that may help you.Engine wont stay running - fb5293b.jpg

An incorrect spark plug or gap could cause problems. If the spark plug is old it could cause problems. 2 cycles can wear out spark plugs faster that a four cycle engine. Most 2 cycles use Champion RDJ47 with 0.020 - 0.025 air gap. Usually a bad plug will make one really hard to start. If yours is starting then sputters and quits your carburetor may need a new diaphragm and gasket set. You may want to check and see once it quits on you again if it is getting spark to the spark plug. You can take the wire off and connect a tester to it or remove the spark plug, connect the wire to it and ground it to the engine and pull the cord. You should see the spark plug sparking. If it doesn't spark your coil could be getting hot and breaking down after it runs 2 or 3 minutes. Hope this helps.

The coil is replaceable. Before taking it off check the air gap between the coil and the flywheel in order to set the new one at the right spacing. You can check at a repair shop or check Ebay to find the one you need.

Engine starts & runs at idle. Dies when switched to RUN & wont accelerate.

Sounds like its a fueling issue. With small tool 2 stroke engines when you pull the throttle you actually increase the amount of air the carb gets. In turn, this rush of air through the venturi of the carb draws more fuel into the cylinder. If your engine is cutting out or wont accelerate this is generally because the engine is either getting too much fuel or not enough for the fuel/air mix to burn effectively. It could also be air getting into the fueling system by means of a damaged fuel line or carb diaphragm. By all means clean the carbon from the exhaust and clean the air filter, they can only help the running of the engine. Hope this is of some help.

How to replace fuel lines craftsman 316.292620

Initially release any clips by squeezing with a pliers and pushing back along the line. Lines can be prised off using a snipe nose pliers or flat blade screw driver, pushing on the edge of the line. Don't pull the lines which can stretch them. Two fuel lines leave the tank of a two stroke engine. The primer bulb sucks gas from the tank via the line with the filter on the end, gas returns to the tank via the other line without the filter. When you replace a line, to check whether they haven't been mixed up, fill the tank but leave the line without the filter above the level of the gas. When you push the primer bulb, gas should eventually squirt out the line without the filter. If the lines are mixed up, air bubbles will flow out of the filter and no gas out the other line.

Gas leak at grommet on gas tank where gas lines enter and leave tank

Yes you should be able to replace the rubber tank seal that the fuel line goes through. Be sure to replace the fuel line(s) when you do.

My gas trimmer starts but wont stay running

hello sir, my machine will only start when pumping primmer bulb or squirting fluid in the carburetor than stops. the fuel line has broken off, in most small carburetors this is a ongoing problem.old fuel will crystallize when left in tank for a long time.plugging up ports, fuel lines, small screen in carburetor.fuel lines will dissolve clogging carb.this is why it will run when the choke is on creating a vacuum to where there is fuel forced in the carb to rum, also the gas will evaporate leaving the oil behind clogging up carb.the thing to do is remove carb. and clean out, replacing gaskets or fuel line if necessary.use carb cleaner to clean out carb.make sure to make note where fuel line go.the fuel filter broke off of fuel line letting debris get in carb plugging it up.the muffler is known to clog up a lot on these machines where they want run. the compression should be 60 to 120 lbs any thing below 60 is junk. when adjusting the carb screws turn in all the way than turnout 1 1/4 turns turn in slow until machine runs also you need to check for spark by removing plug and grounding against engine to check spark, ok.a new spark plug would be a good ideal too , if you are going to make these repairs use new fuel line and filter, hope this helps, any comments welcome, thank you, !!

TORO WEEDEATER WONT RUN UNLESS FUEL TANK IS COMPLETELY FULL

Sounds like your fuel lines have broken or hardened and aren't reaching the fuel when the level falls. Replace both (or 3) fuel lines (one at a time) and don't forget to put the pickup filter back on. You can get the lines at your local mower repair shop for less than $5 for the 2 foot of line that it takes to replace all lines.

What causes a 2 stroke engine to have too much compression and therefore difficult to pull the recoil starter?

Nothing will do this...what is most likely the problem is either the recoil is going bad or you have the wrong spark plug installed.

One year old Ryobi s430 4 stroke trimmer will not start.

Check the fuel lines for cracks/breaks. If they are o.k., then:

Youwill need to disassemble the carburetor and spray with carb.cleaner.Make sure the small screen is free of debris. (Should be able to seedaylight through it.)

Use a Den Tek Brush, (http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=165357&catid=1152),to clean the small portals in carb. These portals can become blocked. Reassemble and start.

If the carb. parts are more than 4 years old, you may have to replace them.

If you need further assistance on:
1. Fuel line replacement or
2. Carburetor kit replacement

Just let me know.
