My wife tried to wash our king size comforter a few weeks ago and when it tried to start washing there was a high pitch noise like it was jammed. When I lifted the lid, there was a bit of a burning smell.
Since then, it still washes fine but when it hits the spin cycle, there is a knocking noise that gets louder as the cycle completes. It gets so loud by the end that it sounds like someone is hitting the side of the washer. I have tried lifting the lid when this is happening and it looks like the basket is off center.
Have we done major damage to the washer? I took the front cover off and didn't see anything at first glance. The three main springs were all in place.

unless some thing inside the washer is broken i would say the drum bearings have started to wear out badly,,,my washer will easly take 3 king size bed sheets and covers,,,that not a lot realy,,,how old is your unit? and how many washes has it done,,,years old and 1000's of washes?
Hi, Most noises from a washing machine occur during the spin cycle. If you hear loud thumping during the spin, the load of clothes may have become unbalanced. Stop the washer and redistribute the clothes, then re-start it. Repeat these steps if necessary.
Ours started knocking several months ago and then progressed to a high pitched sound when in the spin cycle. I manually turned the drum and heard and felt a bearing roughness. I lifted the drum assembly and felt a fair amount of play, which I think the initial knocking noise came from. On the sears web site a new rear drum mount cost 293.00. Today we went and bought a LG model wm2455hw at Home depot, on sale until 2/20/08. I couldn't see paying to repair a machine that only lasted four years.
