Question about Maytag Dependable Clean Top Load Washer, MAV3955EWW

Knocking noise durng spin cycle

My wife tried to wash our king size comforter a few weeks ago and when it tried to start washing there was a high pitch noise like it was jammed. When I lifted the lid, there was a bit of a burning smell.

Since then, it still washes fine but when it hits the spin cycle, there is a knocking noise that gets louder as the cycle completes. It gets so loud by the end that it sounds like someone is hitting the side of the washer. I have tried lifting the lid when this is happening and it looks like the basket is off center.

Have we done major damage to the washer? I took the front cover off and didn't see anything at first glance. The three main springs were all in place.

How do I remove the agitator? Is there a link to a repair guide with pictures that I can read through?

I removed the agitator (removed the screw inside the basket on the stem and pulled it up). The main shaft appeared to be fine. Hard to tell if it is bent because it is only 3 or 4 inches long.

I put my hand under the front lip of the machine and could feel the belt and it appeared to have good tension. Do I need to look at it for something in particular?

Well as it turned out, I bought a new washer/dryer because I thought there must be something major wrong with it. When I was pulling out the old washer, I tipped it up so that I could see underneath and I saw that the belt had a spot where it was worn almost halfway through. The knocking noise must have been when that part of the belt made its way around and probably slipped on either the main shaft or the motor. I replaced the belt and it fixed the knocking problem.

After much debate with my wife, we decided to keep the new washer/dryer.

    Thanks for the help.

I wouldn't recommend washing a king size comforter in your machine. That would be ******* it. I take mine to a laundry mat where they have bigger machines.

My washer has started making a high-pitched noise while spinning.

Hi
to chek what is wrong follow the bellow instruction....
Check the motor bearings
If your washing machine is making a high-pitched whine or squealing noise while running, the main culprit is usually worn motor bearings. To check the motor bearings, remove the belt and run the motor by itself, listening for the noise. If it makes the noise, than the problem is most likely the result of worn motor bearings and has nothing to do with issues in the rest of the washer.
Check for Obstructions
Sometimes coins, bra underwires and other metal objects come loose in the wash and become stuck between the tub and the drum. Using a flashlight, take a good look inside the washing machine. If you see dents, scratches or dings, that's a sign that there either are or have been items bouncing around in there that can make a horrible racket.
Check for Grease Spatter
A high-pitched squealing can be caused when the grease thins around the bearing that's located under the tub. Open up the washing machine and check the interior for grease spatters or spots. That could mean that the grease has thinned out around the bearing and it's making the noise because of rubbing.
Check the Drum for Irregularities
Spin the drum by hand, listening for the noise. If it makes the noise in the same spot with each rotation, the problem could be with the washing machine drum itself. Parts of the drum can corrode over time, leaving it vulnerable to cracks or rust.

How deep do you want to get into this?It sounds like the wash pump motor bearings that are worn. You can pull the unit out flip it over and wd40 the bearings in the motor or you can replace the bearings.Try to lube them first.
