Question about Whirlpool Refrigerators

1 Answer

I have a Whirlpool refrigerator that leaks water into the cool section which I assume is because of a stopped up or partially blocked drain from the automatic defrost from the freezer. It is empty now (between tenants) and thus a good time to repair the drain or other repair if I am wrong. I have looked at it and do not see an obvious location or access to it. I am a licensed air conditioning contractor and thus am fairly good at this sort of thing. Can you advise and more specifically attach a picture or diagramatic of the parts that will show me where t o uncover and clear or repair? Model ET18PKXGW01 built 12/99 serial E35118667

It is an excellent time to attempt the repair. While I don't have a picture indicating the drain tube location, I can say with some certainty that it starts at the back center of the freezer section and runs down the back outside wall of the unit, ending in the drip tray. The tube is usually white rubber.

Whirlpool refrigerator ER2CHMXPL00 & leak

If you have water leaking into the fresh food section of the refrigerator, then the condensate drain if either frozen at the evaporator OR clogged at the drain pan or both. There are air vents in the top of the fresh food section to allow cold air down from the evaporator compartment and return air up from the fresh food section, and these holes cannot be covered or closed off. Check the drain trough under the evaporator for ice build up. Also check that there is nothing stopping the water flow down at the drain pan. If there is no water in the pan under the refrigerator down by the compressor, you have a restriction that needs to be cleared.

My refrigerator has water leaking from the freezer into the main refrigerator compartment. How can I stop that?

Hi,

Ok, you have too sources of water in the freezer section. one from the ice maker if you have one, other is defrost. Either one can cause this, check the drain under the evaporator, most likely the drain is obstructed and the water has no where to exit so it builds up and drains into the lower section (gravity). Te drain can be found under the evaperator behind the false wall in the freezer section. Good Luck

I'm having a problem with my Frigidaire. I get water leaking to the bottom of my frige and then it gets icy later. What how do I resolve this issue?

The drain located just below the cooling coil (evaporator) located in the freezer section is probably partially blocked by debris.

Why is water leaking from front of bottom freezer?

Your refrigerator defrost on the average about every 8 hours so the water that accumulates during defrost has to go somewhere right? You have a defrost drain blockage.
We need to see if the water is overflowing the condensate drain tray or if the blockage is in the turn the drain leads down back of your refrigerator. Much more on this page=> Leaking Refrigerators! Not all blocke drains act the same when your refrigerator leaks so please ask should you have questions. Please provide the model number found around the fresh food section door frame. Kenmore model numbers look like this example=> 321.1234567 If you run into any problems along the way of repair please let me know, Thanks, Sea Breeze

Drain clogged

Water is supposed to drain down a small drain line to a pan down near the compressor where warm air from the condenser fan will blow warm air over the water and evaporate the water again an put it back into the air inside your home, office or wherever your refrigerator is located. Over time that little drain tube gets slime, algae and a gooey white paste gunk that fills the drain line sides up stopping the waterflow downward to the condensate pan below refrigerator. If blocked by gunk or ice you will see trails of liquid leaking down the rear wall of fresh food compartment until it reaches the crisper drawers. Gunk is an accumulation of algae slime and just crud that appears from nowhere in a refrigerators defrost condensate drain line. How a refrigerator leaks is not always the same with every model as you may see frozen ice flowing down the rear wall of freezers on side by sides. Here is an example of a ET18PKXGTO Whirlpool refrigerator leaking water into a cup below the freezer compartment. Click here=> Whirlpool Leak Photo taken by TechnicianBrian. TechnicianBrian.com. And in this photo are several parts listed in photo group #1 were it is most likely running down the wall=> MagicChef CTB1921AR fresh food section. If you still have questions please ask and rate me if I was able to explain this well enough. Every refrigerator is made different so these are examples only. The key is to find if ice or just gunk has blocked you defrost drain. Unplug and then remove the rear panel in back of freezer. We need to see if the water is overflowing the condensate drain tray or if the blockage is in the turn the drain leads down back of your refrigerator. Much more on this page=> Leaking Refrigerators! My whirlpool stopped making ice cubes , water dispenser is o.k. and water to ice cube pan (rubber tube) won't stop running (leaking)

You are going to have to check the water solenoid to see if it is operating correctly. The solenoid operates from the AC power through a micro switch on the rotating cam. When the switch operates the solenoid is jerked out and allows water to flow. When the switch opens (timed to fill up the ice tray) spring pressure snaps the solenoid shut blocking the water flow. If the solenoid valve sticks in the open or partially open position, it allows water to leak by.

Auto defrost works fine except for water accumlating in the bottom of unit under the bottom trays instead of in the water tray by the compressor. graywolf7499@yahoo.com

There is a leak or damage of the pipe leading from the evaporator downwards. The defrosted water is leaking out of the tubing to the bottom, replace this tubing or check the leak on the collecting tray under the evaporator.

Hello,

On a top-freezer when the drain stops up water will back up turning to ice and eventually filling the air ducks with ice blocking airflow to the fresh food section causing it not to cool. You will also see a water leak inside the fresh food section. To fix this, remove the evaporator cover, (back or bottom of freezer) and then remove all the ice. Once all the ice is removed, you need to unclog the drain. I do this by forcing hot water down the drain with a turkey baser but you can use any squirt bottle, I have even used the water hose. Once the drain is clear, mix water and baking soda and pour it down the drain to prevent this from happening again anytime soon.

Hope this helpout,
