Question about Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 ED Film Scanner

Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 ED

My Nikon scanner seems to be scanning film strips ok. However when I load a slide using the slide adapter, I am not seeing the entire frame represented in the browser / preview window. I load a horizontal image and the sides are cropped off. I get the same results when I use the rotate functions in the tools palette. I contacted Nikon and they suggested I send it to New York for service. They said it might need to be cleaned. I don't understand why a cleaning would be required to remedy the problem since the scanner works for film strips in which case I can view the entire frame in the browser window. Has anyone had this problem?

The scanner is only 24mm wide and 36 mm long, so rotate you slide by 90 degs.

Will not recognize 5th image on negative strip because 4 and 5 overlap (slight double exposure). How do I scan 5th image?

I inserted my negative holder in backwards on my Nikon 5000 35 mm scanner. Then I could get the last (5th) slide scanned. But I can not get the scanner to work on my new IMac because of no working driver. Silver Fast has no drivers for the Nikon 5000

Edge Of Scan Overexposed

If the slides are ok , and not overexposed themself, brown discoloration on the side means a problem with the scanner lamp.

Tip

Fix that Jamming Slide in your Nikon CoolScan 5000ED / SF-210 Slide Feeder

I balked when someone whispered this tip to me; the thought of putting foreign objects into my Nikon CoolScan 5000ED slide scanner with its SF-210 slide feeder seemed asking for trouble.

After about a thousand slides worth of experience, and many batches that seemed to jam every other slide, I gave it a try and boy did it do the trick.

The SF-210 slide feeder works flawlessly with newer, thicker, plastic slide mounts, but if you are archiving and digitizing older, cardboard slides like I am then here's what wasn't printed in the CoolScan user's manual:

Take a AAA battery and place it in rear, left side of the slide feeding tray as pictured below.

The slides will fan out nicely, and your Nikon CoolScan will no longer try to load more than one at a time. Instead it will load them one at a time, 50 per tray, and you can actually walk away from it and let it do its job, just the way you intended to when you bought the SF-210 slide feeder attachment!

I hope that helps.

Trying to install Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 ED, for some reason the installation disc doesn't have the LS-5000 ED driver software...? I am running Win Vista. Any ideas?

I do not believe Nikon made drivers specifically for Vista, but you can use the solution here to make your own driver "inf" file and install some that will work anyway. Please read this and carefully follow the directions. If you are using 32 bit, use the 32 bit drivers. If 64 bit, then 64 bit drivers, when creating the new inf.

Did you try saving your choice of settings as user settings ? That way, they will serve as defaults for all subsequent scans.
