Use scanning to monitor channels for transmissions or to find someone
in your group who has accidentally changed channels.
1. Short press MENU until the "Z" appears. The current setting
On/Off will flash.
2. Press either + or – to turn On or Off.
3. Press the PTT to confirm or MENU to continue set up.

Sounds like the radio was subjected to electrostatic discharge. If you have your manual, and it describes a way to do a "master reset" on the radio, follow the instructions. This usually involves pushing down on one key while turning the radio on. Otherwise you have to find a licensed dealer for factory service, as there is no way to repair the radio yourself. The use of surface mount technology still confuses many Techs unless they have been to a company's two or three week seminars.

The symbol you are describing indicates you have the radio on HI power. It will not go away unless you reprogram the radio to LOW power, or change to a low power channel. I couldn't locate your specific model, but all of the Microtalk series radios seem to be basically the same as far as operations. Follow the link below to a manual that you can download/print -- it should work fine with your radios:

This was extremely difficult to find but I have located the manual for you on these walkie talkies. It will be easiest to just use the manual and follow the instructions.
