Simple Tech 320

I'm having the same problem. I've tried 3 different computers and none recognize the drive. XP says that the USB device isn't recognized and it is not accessible from my computer at all. Any ideas?

You might need to initialize the drive.

Right click on “My Computer” or “Computer” on Vista.
Select “Manage”
On the next screen select “Disk Management”
In the lower middle section you should be able to find your drive.
It will show up as Disk 1 or Disk 2….depending on how many drives you have in your computer.
If you click on the area that says Disk # you should get and option to “initialize drive”.
Also to the right it should show the allocation information for the drive. If it says “unallocated” then the drive needs to be partitioned.
Right click on the white box next to the drive listing.
Select the option “New Partition”
This will bring up the partition wizard and you will need to step through this process.
Select a primary partition.
On the next screen accept the maximum size it will provide.
On the next screen you assign a drive letter.
On the next screen you will do the format and accept the default settings.
The formatting will start and will be busy until it is complete.
You can monitor this from the disk management window.

I opened mine up and disconnected the plugs, then reconnected them. Plugged it in and it worked. I think in transport they wiggled a little loose.

Most portable hard drives work with any operating system

Plug and Play is a simple Windows controller that enables your Windows computer to recognize and adjust to hardware changes and devices plugged on your computer such as hard drives, memory cards and USB and Firewire-powered devices with little or no input from a user. If your system is not recognizing plugged-in hardware, the plug-and-play device may be disabled and may cause instability on your system. Enabling this feature is simple.

Click "Start" on your computer screen and then click "Run." Type in services.msc on the run window and hit "Enter." Scroll down the services window and right-click "Plug and Play." Click "Properties" on the pop-up menu. Select "Automatic" under start-up type if it is disabled. Click "OK" to save the changes. Click "Start" on your screen and click "Control Panel." Double-click "System" and click the "Hardware" tab. Click the "Device Manager" button and then right-click the plug-and-play device you want to enable, then click "Enable." Close the device manager. Hope this helps.

Computer doesnt recognize drive

Try a different usb port on the computer. Maybe the usb port you are using is bad.

Try the portable drive on another computer and see if it is recognized. If not, the portable drive might be defective.

Have you tried to uninstall it from your device manager? When you do that, scan for hardware changes, it might pick it up. Also, try moving it to a different usb port after you uninstall from device manager.

Connect your harddrive to another computer like windows xp then if it is recognize then take data backup . If your harddrive is fine then follow below for laptop. First make sure usb cable connected to harddrive is working fine.
try it in different usb ports.
Press windows key +R key so you can see run then type in run "devmgmt.msc" then press ok so you can see device manager uninstall all usb drivers then it automatic install usb drivers.
then check.
Also you need to change registry for that type in run "regedit" then press ok then you can see registry editor then locate below key.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11 CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
And remove upper filter and lower filter. Then restart computer then check.

I have a Simple Tech (simple Drive) 320GB external hard drive.the light comes on But my computer won`t recognize it. The light comes on but that`s it.

Try connecting the drive to a different computer, to see if your computer is the problem.

If necessary, open the external case, and separate the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter.

Connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive in some computer, to see if the disk-drive itself still can be accessed.

If not, and you have "important" data on the disk-drive, search the Internet for a professional "Data Recovery Service" -- you ship your disk-drive to them, pay them a lot of money, and they repair the disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your files to a brand-new disk-drive.

Windows does not recognize the device ?

Hello raigangarkam,

There's a chance that that particular USB slot on your computer may not be working.

You may try to attach another USB device on that port to check if that works or not.

You might also want to try & attach your 2GB Cruzer flash drive on another USB port or another computer & check if it recognizes it.

If it still won't be recognized on the other computer, you might need to replace that 2GB Cruzer USB Flash Drive.

Hope this helps.

Maxtor one Touch 300GB no steady green light

Hi,

The USB Isn,t supplying/providing enough Power to the device.
Search e-bay or similar for a 2 into 1 USB Cable.
Then power the unit with 2 USB Ports on the Computer.
2 x USB Into 2 x Sockets On P.C. 1 x Into Device Drive.
This will be enough power to operate the Device Correctly.

I,ve done this on several external Drives, never failed for Me.
