Memory card locked

This is a tip explaining the error, "Memory card locked". We will also give you the resolution for this error. This error, or rather message, is usually the result of the following situations.

Situation 1:

Well, this is usually the problem, on the memory card, there is a little switch on the left side, which can switch between "Lock" or "Unlock".

If you get the display, memory card locked, remove the card from your camera, or USB adapter and have a look at the switch, if it is switched to locked, move the lever top the other side and place it back. This should solve your problem, if not, lets have a look at situation 2.

Situation 2:

Open the card slot of your camera and have a look inside with a bright light/ torch. You should see a little metal tab or switch inside the card slot. This is the write protection switch.

With time and repeated use , the switch will start to bend slightly until it will no longer depress when a unlocked card is inserted.

With a toothpick or needle , slightly and very gently push this tab up a little bit. (some camera's will require you to pull the tab down), This will allow the switch to operate once again and should solve your problem.

I really hope this can steer you in the right direction. Please rate accordingly.

Kind regards

When i switch on the camera i get a message 'reinsert memory card'. Same error reappears once I re-insert it. I have also seen the message 'error formatting memory'. Any suggestions?

The camera is asking you to format the memory card. You didn't give the camera make or model so I assume it has a SD or an SDHC memory card make sure the card in in the "write" position here is a diagram for this

SD card are the same so it doesn't matter that this diagram has used Canon memory cards.
Next go into your camera's set up menus and scroll down through the different functions to find format, follow the on screen instructions. you should be good to go

Hi, My Nikon D90 with Nikkor 18-200mm lens is giving me the following error message: Memory card is locked. Slide to "write" position. Any ideas how to correct this? Thanks! Jennifer

Take the memory card out of the camera and look at it. SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If the switch is already in the proper position, slide it fully the other way and then back again. Then put the card back into the camera.

My Kodak C913 sometimes follows switch on with the statement memory card needs formatting. I have tried to do this several times but to no avail. I am then faced with a message which says that I should use...

First of all, stop putting your cards in another camera....this can corrupt the card. With no card in the camera, go into the menu and find "reset"...follow the on-screen instructions. Insert your card, turn on the camera and go into the camera menu and find "format"...follow the on-screen instructions. Let me know the outcome.

Inserted new sandisk ultraII 2gb into camera. error message, disk locked. unlocked, still error message

Does it work with other cards? There's a small switch on the memory card reader inside the camera which tells the camera that the card is locked. Most likely this switch is broken. You can try to point it with needle or something but I'm afraid you will have to give it away for a repair to a local repair shop or Canon service center.
