The problem may be in creating the file on the memory stick. I created a file PS3 than "UPDATE" within the PS3 file, as per the update date you sent. Am I downloading incorrectly?

Hello sorry to here your troubles.. not sure where you went for update.

Go to this website

download the update to your usb 4g. then with power off place into Ps3.
turn it back on and see if it recognizes the update. view the usb 4g to see if updates exist on drive.

if this does not help you need to reformat your 4g usb drive. this may delete all files on drive so be aware of this if trying reformat.

write back for further problem solving if things still do not work.

Then follow the prompts. The website has more info.

Your HARD DRIVE (aka: Hard Disk), located on the left side of the unit, may have crashed. You will need to replace the HD.

When you replace your hard drive, you will need to have the latest firmware on a

usb stick. Download the firmware from the playstation official website onto a usb

stick. Once prompted by your system you will need to insert the usb stick into the

PS3. Good luck..

You will need 2.5" Sata Hard Drive.

Before you replace the hard drive, try:

Try accessing the recovery menu 'safe mode'.

Press and hold the power button until the systems shuts off. (wait 2 seconds)

Press and hold the power button again until you here 3 beeps. Let go.

It should ask you to connect your controller via usb and press the PS button in

the middle of your controller. There will be a menu with 6 options. Update using option 6.

Update 3.41 gets to around 20% then fails due to an error of the 801 kind

Hello Jacko, let me try to help you out with this fix. First we're gonna try to update your console from an external drive.
Switch completely off your PS3, also the main power behind the console. Hold on 30 sec. Turn on the main switch wait for the red stand-by led Turn on the console with the front switch and HOLD on it, until your console will switch on then off again Release the switch and now put your finger on it again and hold on it. ATTENTION now: you will hear the first beep, it is the switching on so don't consider it, after 1 second you'll hear another beep then after another second you'll hear 2 fast beep-beep in this moment release the switch. Now your ps3 will ask to plug a controller, it must be connected with the USB cord to the console, and press the PS key. You're in, make your choice. If you still can't get in, try again few more times. IMPORTANT: you can enter the menu only of your last firmware is 2.50 or higher!
Here follow the instruction on how to make the update: Now you need a PC and a USB memory stick. Create a new folder on your USB stick, named PS3 then inside the PS3 folder create a new one and name it UPDATE (just be sure to call those folders exactly as i wrote them: PS3 and UPDATE other than that the ps3 won't found the file) Go here: http://us.playstation.com/support/systemupdates/ps3/index.htm download the latest firmware and save into UPDATE folder on your mem stick plug the usb device onto a free usb slot on your console restart the ps3 recovery options and choose "System Update" and follow the easy instructions onscreen. If it all went well the PS3 will get the firmware from usb key and hopefully it'll install it correctly. Now, if you're still stuck let's try smth more:
Access the recovery menu again, first try the "soft" option: restore file system.
If it won't fix let's move over, enter the recovery again and choose restore ps3 system. This is a total restore, you'll lose all your data (movies, mp3's, pics, but you won't lose trophies and if you bought smth from PSN you can download your stuff again for free).
IF none of these did the job you have to call sony technical support :(
Please let me know!! Good luck, Peter

We have a ps3 60gb, and all that comes up on the screen is the wavy lines that is the backdrop for the homescreen. now we did the system reset and now when i turn the ps3 on nothing happens, it just look...

If your PS3 has been restored and the green power light is staying on after you turn it on it could possi bly be the video resolution. If you have been using the PS3 on HDMI you may need to reset it back to standard definition. Do this by holding down the power button for 5 seconds. If that doesnt help try going into the restore menu and "Restore PS£ system" again. If that fails too, download the latest PS3 update and put it onto a USB stick. Using the PS3's recovery menu again, select System update. It will then continue to update from the USB stick. I really hope this helps you out.

PS3 problem

Is it trying to download an update? If so, try downloading the update from the sony site on a pc and save it to a usb stick in a folder called UPDATE (has to be capitals) which should be in a folder called PS£ (deatils of this are on the sony site).

Then turn on the PS3 in safe mode by holding down the start button until you hear three beeps and go to option 6, system update and follow the onscreen instructions. Just this minute done this on my sons PS3

My playstaion3 turns on but all i get is a black screen. Everything is connected...the remote wont even turn the system on. If it does turn on the screen is messed up and it freezes.

Ok first of all take out the Hard drive (under a cover on the bottom of the PS3) and reinsert it. Then connect the remote with the USB cable and when asked press the PS button. If it still doesn't work you are going to have to download the newest PS firmware from the PS website, put it on a flash disk (memory stick), put it in the PS3 and follow the instructions on PS's site to update the firmware.
