Question about Cameras

What did I pay $13.99 for? I thought I was getting some expert help

I have a FinePix S5200.
I was able to download pictures using a SHG 18 in 1 Reader/Writer. But then when I put the Dx 1 Mb card back in the camera and turned it on, I get the message:
Card not initialized

I can't format the card in the camera or in the read/writer.

What am I doing wrong?

Thank you for the link to the HP drive key boot utility. The download does not listng Windows XP as a supported operating system, so I did not download the software. Is the operating system not important? And it was an HP download. That puzzled me because I have a Fuji camera and a Fuji picture card.

I'm not familiar at all with my Fuji Fine Pix S5200 camera or the little Fujifilm xD picture card that came with it. Is this what I will do (after I get the right download): Download the software, connect my USB card reader/writer, insert the card, run the software against the drive which My Computer has assigned to the card and then put the card back in the camera.

About the title to the post; i.e., $13.99 what did I pay for . . . As a newbee, I didn't know how to navigate the site and got on a page that asked for $9.99 more. I thought I had just thrown my money down the toilet. I can tell, however, that I'm going to get help. So that's great . . . And I couldn't figure out how to add comments to my problem, so I added them this way, which is probably wrong, but what the hay . . .

Thanks for the great help. I would never have found that link by myself in a million years. The USB transmissions must be cumbersome because it took a long time to blank the disc and reformat it. When I did it in the camera, it was fairly fast.

Thanks again. And if you offered this advice free, then I paid $13.99 for nothing. But I figure your help was worth more than that anyway. Thanks again.

Hi webgirl,

Your title/concern "What did I pay $13.99 ...", are you referring to availing of Premium Solution or a Live Session? For inquiries of this nature, pls send an email to General Support support@fixya.com.

As for your concern on a DX 1 Mb card not initialized and/or can't format, it could be that the memory card has been corrupted. Since neither the camera nor Windows can format, perhaps you can try and use HP Drive Key Boot Utility available here. Of course formatting would erase all and everything inside the memory card.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

    Hi again webgirl,

Thank you for your postback and additional information.

The HP Drive Key Boot Utility will work within Windows XP. Though named that way, it will also work for any USB memory device(s) as long as it is attached through the USB port of the PC. Hence the memory card inserted into a card reader will be treated as such. If you reader has several slots, you will notice the your PC will list many new drives but only one (1) would work (where the card is inserted). It of course will not matter to what camera the memory card is attached to eventually. Pls follow on-screen instruction if and when you run the HP program. Just remember that the memory card will have to be treated as a hard disk drive.

After successful formatting with HP Drive Key Boot Utility, remove the card from the reader, insert in your camera and format it again using the camera's built-in format function. If it is a go (camera format) then you're all set. If not, you may need to replace the card since it is already suspect. You wouldn't want to trust valuable photos with something you're not 100% sure will keep your images.

On your concern "...what did I pay..." depends which of the 3 choices you clicked on when you first entered the site and posted your concern. The first two (2) are paid services and the bottom is for free assistance. Am not sure which one you clicked but from initial appearances, it would seem to be the free assistance. If however you were asked for a credit card number or asked to pay something, please clarify with General Support support@fixya.com.

Would appreciate an update for any development(s).

Where in your site is the software for S5200 finepix?

You don't need any software.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or, despite what I said first, you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.

Try buying lense cleaner to remove fingerprints, smudges and other 'particles' from the optical lense. Call Fuji, let them advise you.

Downloading problems

Fuji S5200/5600 are indeed pretty slow to download pictures when directly linked to a computer throught the USB port.
The only solution to speed up downloading is to remove from the camera the XD card and put it in a card reader provided with USB 2 interface.
Picasa, too, is not the fastest program to copy pictures on your PC. In my experience, XN View
(free) is faster than Picasa in copyng pics.
