Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I cannot duplicate my displays without the resolution being messed up on one of them. I have a Dell lcd monitor: ST2410 24" and a TV, Toshiba Regza 46" When I duplicate the displays the Dell Monitor's resolution is always crushed. When I have both plugged in and display only on the monitor, my monitor is always #2 I don't know if this affects anything but that's all the information I can think of including, and the resolution is 1920x1080

Depending on your OS, this is dealt with differently.

On Windows

  1. Go into the display properties.
  2. Go under settings.
  3. Highlight your primary monitor and check "Use as primary"
  4. Highlight your secondary monitor and check "Extend my desktop"
  5. Set the resolution on each display
If it won't let you change display resolution independently, you will need to update the video driver. Also remember that even if it works, going between displays of two different resolutions and aspect ratios causes problems with many games and programs including many Adobe products.

Let me know if you need instructions for the Mac or Linux as it varies depending on what flavor Linux or version Mac you use.

Can't get to full screen. I need to be at 1080i

The 'ASPECT', 'PICTURE MODE', 'ZOOM' button on the remote will let you adjust the aspect ratio of the display.
The 1080i/p, 720i/P resolution is not done at the TV, its the video source that determine what resolution the TV will display, same way as your PC monitor works, it is control by the PC Video resolution setting.

While at home I plug a wide screen monitor into my Dell studio 1737 Laptop. As long as I keep my lid open the icons and print on my monitor are the right size. When I close the lid, icons and prints get...

You appear to be cloning your internal LCD and as long as it is active, the resolution setting for the LCD is also controlling the resolution of the external monitor. When the LCD is closed, then the default resolution of the external monitor is being used by Windows 7 (It apparently has autodetected the size of the monitor and knows the Highest optimal resolution it will display.) The higher the resolution, then smaller the icons.
To resolve, go to display properties and check the resolution of the internal LCD and then set the External display to the lower resolution.
You should be able to wake the system with an external keyboard, by pressing the spacebar, if the system is sleeping

Can't view connected Dell Inspiron 9400 computer on Toshiba 37 AV52U TV

You need to change your computer display settings following your TV user manual.

Here follow the compatible display settings as on page 57-chapter 9 on manual.

Put resolution 640x480 and frequency 59,940Htz.

Here the user manual where you can find the same information on chapter 9.

See How to change display settings: screen resolution, screen
refresh

Do not forget to evaluate the solution.

Many thanks.

How can I make fonts look good in an LCD monitor ?

The VGA connection should be fine; I have DVI and when I switched from analog, the difference was pretty minimal, to my eyes.

Is it just the fonts that are blurry, or everything? If fonts only, then this almost certainly suggests that running the ClearType tuner again would solve the problem. But this applies to all displays, so if one is good and the other is not, then this isn't it.

If everything is a little blurry, then this suggests one of two problems -- the first, you report trying, which is that the display adapter is set to a different resolution than the native resolution of the LCD monitor itself. Your display adapter should probably be able to drive 2 monitors (the built-in laptop monitor and the external monitor) at once. You should be able to set their resolutions separately.

Assuming Windows XP: Start > Control Panel > Display > Settings > at which point, you should see two monitors listed in a dropdown. Set them to their native resolutions there (using the slider bar, usually all the way to the right), and save.

If you do have the display resolutions set to their native resolutions for both monitors, then it's possible that your external monitor is messed up. A quick test would be to run the on-screen settings, usually from a button on the monitor itself. If what is displayed there is sharp and what is displayed from Windows is not, then this points to a problem with the display driver. If everything, even the on-screen display is blurry, then perhaps the monitor settings are messed up -- usually there's an option to restore to factory settings -- try that.

If that doesn't work, I'm probably out of ideas, unless you have further information.
