Same problem: No spinning, Coupler OK, OIL on the floor and surrounding area...coming from gear case.

So far cost is $12 coupler, $144 gear case, $27 clutch.

Is this the way to go ?

It seems like TRIAL and ERROR.

Are gear case and clutch the solution ?

You were able to get to the coupler??? if so youre were half way there. first off you will need a gearcase and a clutch assy. 1/2 socket , 7/16 socket adn maybe a reg screwdriver.start by removing the agitator from within the tub, after getting hte fabric softener dispenser off there is an opaque handled cover to remove, the you will see a 7/16 bolt remove it and the agitator will come off, set aside you may also have to remove a small white plastic(something or ohter) with a piece of steel (sorta like a cam/ lock)willlift right off the gearcase, next remove the cover and the pump and disconnect the motor so as you now have access to replace motor coupling.. you ll hten need to tip machine back and remove the (3) 1/2 inch bolts mounting the gear case to the underneath of of the machine and the gear case will now fall right out( litle persuasion never hurt anyone!!, the clutch will mount to the new gear case, and there are detailed instructions as to how in the withthe part

if yo have oil onfloor no other place it comes from. the clutch( mounted ontop of the gearcase, itst the 6 in round metal spring loaded device ) may be slipping from the oil ..if the motor coupling was indeed intact, 3 "spokes"on each end. then the motor should turn the gearcase.i guess there could be soething stuck between the tubs preveenting it from spinning , you would see that just by looking throught the outer plastic tub( although couldnt see what thenoise would then.

My Kenmore 80 series washer won't spin, and it just makes a loud gear grinding noise. What could this be, and how do I fix, in the simplest form please I'm chick... :)

rebecca it is probably the motor coupler. Move or slide ur machine over and if there is ruber filings under it then it is the coupler.

Won't spin, makes clunking noise, drains fine

If it agitates fine , with normal noise , drains with lid closed , then the problem is probably the transmission .

your kenmore sounds like it lost the coupler do you feel ok opening the machine and inspecting the part?
the loud noise may be the coupler. I think your timer is working ok. because it goes through the cycle..

If you inspect it to be a bad coupler you can go here and click on the link

Maytag Performa - Loud Noises during Spin Cycle

This washer is JUNK!!!!!! We have the same washer (2 1/2 years old) and same problem. Tried to replace the bearing myself, no luck. So I called a repair man to come out and look at it. As soon as i told him the model number, they would'nt even come out. Very common problem for this washer. We are on our way to Sears to purchase a Kenmore.....GOOD LUCK

When replacing direct motor coupler not enough?

Gear case part # 3360629 retails for about $170.
This dosn't happen very often.
You can find a junk whirlpool, roper, kenmore or kitchen-aid and pull the motor and gear case to save $$$$$

If your washer fills, agitates, drains, but will not spin, the likely cause is the gear case (transmission). A new gear case can run about $200 just for the part. With labor, this could be a bit expensive to repair. I hope this helps you some.
