Try taking the cartridges out and replacing them, when the window pops up to ask if you've replaced the cartridges, tell a white lie.

I have an hp deskjet 940c. I don't know if this is the same model as deskjet inkjet. Anyway what light is on or off on the front when a new ink cartridge(s) is needed?

For the HP 940c, there is only one light to indicate a possible low ink cartridge. The LED above the cartridge symbol (the only one without a button) will flash. (Note: this LED is the second from the left.) When you see the error code, open the printer's top cover. If the error is a low ink issue, the LED will stop blinking.

With the cover open, the cartridge carrier will move until the yellow arrow lines up with an icon on the printer itself. These five icons are in order from left to right (as you look at the cartridges) : tri-color ink cartridge problem, black ink cartridge problem, tri-color ink low, black ink low and cartridges OK. If both cartridges are low, replace the one indicated by the arrow. Then the cartridge carrier will move to indicate the other cartridge is low. (If only one has a problem, after you replace it, the carrier will move to the cartridge OK symbol.)

If HP offers the full-feature software for your OS, then install the software. Use the HP Deskjet Toolbox to get exactly which cartridge needs to be replaced without needing to be ready to replace both (or to monitor your ink level (approximate ink level)).

The manual for the Deskjet 940c is available as a PDF from HP: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DocumentIndex.jsp?contentType=SupportManual&lang=en&cc=us&docIndexId=64179&taskId=125&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=35985 .

I hope this helps.

Where can I find a diagram of the black ink cartridge so I can locate the proper place to re-ink it?

NOTE: If a refilled or re manufactured print cartridge, or a cartridge that has been used in another product, is installed the ink level indicator is inaccurate or unavailable.
  • Make sure that the product is turned on and connected to the computer.
  • Click Start and click Control Panel .
  • Double-click the Printer and Faxes folder.
  • Right-click the icon for the product and click Preferences .
  • Click the Services tab, and then click Service this Device .
  • The printer Toolbox opens. Click the Estimated Ink Level tab. A graphic showing the estimated ink levels appears. The graphic shows both the color and black ink cartridge with the ink level indicated by the fill inside the cartridge diagram. Figure 1: Estimated ink levels - both cartridges lowc738e3b.gif

How to check ink cartridge levels on HP Deskjet 4260

You will need the original set up discs that came with the printer. Re-install back on to your computer and there should be a HP program comes with it that will approximate your ink levels.

    HP 6940 Deskjet Low Ink

It is not uncommon for a refilled HP ink cartridge to register as empty. If it was otherwise filled properly, it should yield the correct number of pages, but you may not be able to get the warning light to go out.

You can try tapping the cartridge on a hard surface. This only works sometimes. Be careful not to splash any ink.

    I hope this helps.

    Ink level didn't change

    s.gif Deskjet 5100 series
    1. Click Start or c01319360.gif , click All Programs , click Hewlett-Packard , and then click Printer Assistant .
    2. Click Utilities .
    3. Click View ink levels .
      • If a cartridge is low on ink, discontinue these steps, replace the cartridge, and then try printing again.
      • If the cartridges contain a sufficient amount of ink, continue to the next step.
    4. Click Printer Maintenance .
    5. Click Clean Cartridges .
    6. Follow the on-screen instructions.
ISSUE: After installing a new HP Inkjet print cartridge, the ink level indicator remains at the previous level. SOLUTION: Continue to print and ignore the ink level indicator. The print cartridge is full of ink, it just is not being measured accurately.

I used to refill the ink cartridge of HP Deskjet D1460 by injecting ink. The problem is the level of ink is not resetted to full level, its still very low level. However, the printer prints normally

Close the top left pin at head contactor (1 pin only), with tape. Plug it in head carriage. Unplug it. Close to top rigtht with tape too. Plug the head. Unplug head. Remove all the tape cleanly. Plug again. See ink monitor.

I have a new HP Deskjet F4280 bought 3 weeks ago & the blank ink cartridge was empty & I refilled it in a store & placed it back but printer recognise that the cartridge is empty & it does not have a chip.

You cannot reset the ink level for the HP 60 ink cartridge. Simply ignore the ink level indicator if you refill your cartridges. It is only an estimate of the ink level anyway. See pg 72 of the user manual.
