Question about PC Desktops

I just installed the Linksys WRT54G wireless router however at no time did the installation ask for me to install security controls. How do I now convert the installation to a secure network with my own unique password? When I was installing the "make my computer wireless Wizard"it repeatedly indicated it could not make the wireless computer connection, and it was hung up for a long time "checking my computer' The wireless appears to be working OK, but I can not find a way to make the wireless network secure with a password. What do I do?

Hi marpro,

It would seem that you have two (2) concerns:
1. Wireless Network password and
2. Wireless Connectivity.

To enable the wireless security, pls open a browser at 192.168.1.1, pls enter user name and password, on the next display pls click on the Wireless tab, pls note down the Network Name (SSID), pls click on the Wireless Security tab, select WEP, next display pls choose your Encryption (either 40/64-bit 10 hex or 104/128-bit 26 hex digits), in the Passphrase, pls enter your alphanumeric chosen password (or you can allow the router to auto generate, though easier to forget) you may or may not enter Key 1 ~ 4 and/or TX Key 1 ~ 4, click on Save Settings button at the bottom. The router may ask you to reboot it.

On the Wireless Connectivity, pls post back what wireless networking card you are using (USB dongle, built-in to laptop, PCI, brand & model) since each has a particular way of being activated and connected aside from the built-in Windows Wireless Networking.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Hi
There are few steps to find solution. However it will be easier to pinpoint the issue if you provide some details such as your computer's operating system, Wireless Adapter's model number. If you have Ethernet cable you can also configure the Router in case if you cannot establish connection via Wireless.
I will be looking for your reply,

I have a Compaq Vista Home Basic desktop set up to a Linksys router for my PS2, PS3 and Wii. I want to set up a second desktop computer (Windows98) that will be wireless also. How do I do that? Thank...

a win98 machine will likely have a rg-45 plug in the back, it's unlikely that may come with wireless network card. just use a straight through cable (the typical network cable) to physically connect the win98 machine to your linksys router, if you don't have any special security on your router, your win98 should be connected after a few seconds.

if you are getting a network card (possilby wireless):
install a network card on your windows 98 computer. if you're buying one make sure in the package says that it is supported by win98 (most are supported in win2k, xp, vista and 7 now so look closely before buying),

if you already have a network card and you are trying to install it, look for proper drivers from the network card manufacturer (drivers need to match model number and operating system(win98)). install your network card as per indicated in package or website if you are downloading drivers.

if you are connecting wirelessly, assuming that drivers are properly connected look in the network manager you just installed and look for the network name for your linksys router (whatever you configure that to be when your first install the linksys router) and attemtp to connect providing a password or any security requested.

in a nutshell that's what you need to do!

Need software download for Linksys Wireless-G broadband router WRT54G as I no longer have my CD that originally came with it and I have a Toshiba Satellite A-135 laptop I want to install it on

You can install it manually and no need for the setup CD for it , Try calling linksys tech support and they will walk you through with the process even without the setup CD , this is the linksys tech support number 800-3267114..

Hope that helps.......

Cannot get online with Wireless G WRT54G router. Can get online by pressing Cisco Systems button but only temporarily.

Do U see the router signal on the wireless network connection search?
Sometimes the linksys systems cd does not want to work on some pc's. try using the control panel - add/remove programs and uninstall all programs for the linksys. Then goto the control panel - system - hardware and uninstall the linksys card. Leave the actual card installed and reboot. After it detects your card use the linksys cd to load only the driver.
In the properties of the wireless connection, let windows manage it.
The above is based upon the factory defaults of the router. Any keys to access the router would have to be used on the pc.

Marcia...............Is this a small home system here. Was this an onsite tech. ISP is Internet Service Provider and not so sure that is the issue. WOW this can get confusing. Perhaps this tech can redo his work for sake of your time. An adapter does allow the ISP to see how many PCs you are using.
Sorry Marcia .................Really would be nice if Mr. Tech could reassist you on this.
