Question about GE GSS20IEP Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

Compressor running, Fans are NOT

Eight year old GE side-by-side, Model # GSS25TSR. I replaced the mother board, but no change. Compressor runs and cools, but neither the compressor fan nor the evaporator run. I'm running out of time before my food spoils. Please help.

Thanks, Jack, but I checked the list of covered models, and mine is not among them. I just checked the compressor tank and it is very hot, so I unplugged the refrigerator. I was hoping to keep it as cold as possible, but now I don't know what I'll do. Can you tell me where the relays are located on this model so I can check them? I would appreciate it.

Ok. I found the relay and removed it. Do you think replacing this relay is a promising solution? I'll have to drive the the appliance parts store, about twenty miles away, and if there are other, more likely possibilities, I would really appreciate hearing about them before I go. Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

GE posted a free repair and replacement program on the motherboard and control board due to a known issue, you don't have to replace it yourself. that means you may also be able to get other issues addressed for free at that time if the symptoms are similar.

If you want to try and fix it yourself, check the power on the compressor - I know it cools but that doesn't mean it's working right, then check the Overload and/or relays as well. Maybe current isn't being regulated correctly, this could even be an underlying cause of the high incidence of board failure.

Should be a small black box with two copper contacts (tabs that look like you would see on an electrical plug) located near the compressor.

There is a big difference in Relay prices, they range from $4.99 to about $30. honestly, not sure which one that particular model uses, but may be cheaper and easier to replace than to test.

I can't think of anything else. If the relay is bad the compressor could run hot. It doesn't explain the issues with the fan and evaporator directly, but when things screw with power everything else can behave erratically. You know the board is good, the compressor seems to work, so it is the most likely, easiest, and cheapest part to replace and equally easy to take back if it doesn't help.

Compressor stopped running in GE GSS25KGMC WW side by side. Fans run. Is there an inline fuse to check? A circuit breaker anywhere? The unit isn't that old.

Remove the main control board , and look on the soldered side , behind the small black boxes . You will be looking for a " bullseye" which is a pin , where the solder has become unsoldered around it . If you find it , resolder and it should work . If all solder joints , behind the boxes look ok , then replace the board .

My refrigerator is not running, but the light is

I believe we need to inspect the mother control board on the rear of your refrigerator for burns or signs of heat damage. The board part number is WR55X10942 and they are usally the problem when the lights are on and the compressor or fans are not running. Sea Breeze

Compressor & Evap. Fan both work for 12 hours then evap stops

I believe that because defrost is done by the mother control board this is why this is happening the part of the board that controls defrost is malfunctioning and the only way to resolve the problem is to replace the mother board part number WR55X10656 You can find the replacement board at these places below. Sounds like an internal mounting spring for the compressor. Only solution is replacing the compressor. However the compressor can run in this condition for years. Replacement compressors only have a one year warranty. A new refrigerator comes with a five year warranty.

Compressor not working

Why did you change the mother board? Was the compressor working before the change? If it was, then you need to check the new board and see if there were any wires that need to be cut when it was installed. If it wasn't running before the board change then you might try the overload on the compressor first. Also it should be checked with a compressor checker to determine if the comp is at fault or not
