Hi, i think you don't need and update, are you using win7, XP?, just use the windows installer disk when you've fitted it, put the new HD drive in, then boot from DVD/CD. back up pic/photos 1st mind... let me know..

If this doesn't work put your old HD back in and it will boot up as normal...

The BIOS has been erased, I do not have floppy, but i want to write the bios

In order to write a BIOS, you would have to have acess to very expensive equipment as well as be amazingly good at whatever programming language they use to write BIOS (something like Assemly or some other hardware-level language). In short, you can't do it.
See the motherboard drivers section for a listing of computer motherboard manufacturer driver and BIOS update pages or our support section for computer manufactures.
Unlike earlier computers that date before 1996, new computers have a Flash BIOS which enables users to update the BIOS chip on motherboard using a software program. These programs have the capability of correcting issues that may be occurring with your computer hardware. These issues can include, but are not limited to, the below corrections.
  • Add the capability of adding new hardware into the computer.
  • Additional options or corrections to the BIOS setup screen.
  • Correcting issues with incompatibility with hardware.
  • Update hardware capacity and capabilities.
  • Missing information or instructions.
  • Update a startup logo.
Older computers who need an update for the Year 2000 issue

Only obtain the BIOS update from the computer manufacturer or motherboard manufacturer, unless the computer manufacturer or motherboard manufacturer is no longer in business.

Do not shut off or reboot the computer until the BIOS instructs you to do so.

Verify that the BIOS you have been instructed to use or the one that you are downloading will resolve the issue you are attempting to fix. Remember that BIOS updates will only fix hardware issues and will not fix software issues, unless that software is directly related to the hardware.

Verify the BIOS version and make sure that the BIOS update you plan on using is the next version. For example, if your BIOS is 1.0a, and the manufacturer has 1.0b, 1.0c, 1.0d, etc. You should be updating to 1.0b. If you need 1.0d, update to 1.0b, 1.0c and then 1.0d unless otherwise instructed by your computer or motherboard manufacturer.

Verify that the computer has been scanned for viruses, viruses that may reside in the write-able portion of the BIOS may cause the BIOS to abort or fail, possibly causing the computer to encounter additional issues.

If you are updating a laptop or portable computers BIOS ensure that it has AC power and is not running off the battery.

Finally, when upgrading a BIOS, it is important that your read the disclaimer and any other information or instructions included with the download. Many computer manufactures will not support a BIOS if done by the user of the computer without the instructions of a technician or company representative. If the BIOS causes any difficulty with the computer you may be held responsible.

How do I download a BIOS update without a working computer?

If you are unable to get to the Internet in order to download a BIOS update we suggest downloading and creating a BIOS diskette on a different computer. For example, a friends computer or a computer at your work.

Controller MSI K8N Neo4 does not work

SHUT DOWN COMPUTER AND CLEAR CMOS BY RESETTING JUMPER ON MOTHERBOARD AND THEN RETURN JUMPER TO NORMAL POSITION OR USE RESET BUTTON. UNPLUG ALL HDD SATA CONNECTORS FROM HDD. BOOT COMPUTER TO BIOS. MAKE SURE ENABLE ALL SATA IS ENABLED, PRESS F10 AND EXIT.YOU WANT TO SHUT DOWN AGAIN. NOW REATTACH SATA HDD AND CONNECTORS AND BOOT TO BIOS AGAIN. NOW HIT F10 AND LET COMPUTER RESTART AND LOAD INTO THE OS. LOGON AND CHECK DEVICE MANAGER..SHOULD BE THERE. IF NOT CHECK MOTHER BOARD WEB SITE FOR BIOS UPDATE. IF BIOS UPDATE DOESN'T DO THE TRICK, SHUT DOWN AND DISCONNECT THE IDE DRIVE, UNLESS IT CONTAINS YOUR OS. TRY BOOTING TO BIOS AND CHANGE ORDER OF 1ST BOOT OPTIONS, HIT F10 AND EXIT AND ALLOW COMPUTER TO BOOT TO OS, THEN LOGON, GO TO DEVICE MANAGER AND REMOVE IDE AND RESTART, ONLY IF THIS HDD DOES NOT CONTAIN OS. YOU SHOULD BE FINE AFTER THIS, OR INSTALL YOUR OS ON THE SATA HDD.

XP did not find hard disk drive even though i just put one in before trying to install XP. Please help.

If the computer was detecting the old hard drive and working, then either the new drive is not being detected correctly by the bios, or the drive is not seating correctly or has a problem. Make sure the drive connector has no bent pins etc, if the connections are good, then you may need a bios update in order to use the drive. A bios update if needed must be gotten from the Dell website. Enter the service tag number (from the bottom of the machine) at the prompt on the Dell support page to find and get the needed files. You can burn the file to CD and boot from it to update the bios. Complete instructions are on the Dell webpage where the file is found.

I purchased an ex lease acer travelmate 6592 and I now find the hdd is password protected, I have tried another hard drive but the computer does not recognise either drive. How do I get around this problem...

There is software available to remove HDD passwords, or a computer store may be able to remove it.

You do not need an OS installed in order to update the BIOS; you can use a floppy disk and a BIOS update program to update the BIOS.

Sometimes, you have to restart the computer a few times to get the BIOS to recognize another HDD. You could install the other HDD, and try to boot with a bootable CD with partitioning capabilities

Our computer is telling us we need to update the BIOS computer shuts itself off

All BIOS components are serviceable via a firmware upgrade that is known as "flashing" this process is called "updating the BIOS". The process itself is fragile since any power fluctuation during a flash may irrevocably corrupt a BIOS' firmware. Great care will need to be taken in order to safely accomplish this.

This guide will help you flash your BIOS by taking precautions and walking you through each step. Not all computers will have the same BIOS manufacturer, let alone the same process, but many have similar steps and precautions.

Also check with your motherboard manufacturers website for specific BIOS updates and updating instructions. mpawlak908

New HDD inserted into Pavilion ZD7000 - will not boot from XP CD

Try your old HDD in it and see if that works. If it does work then nothing is damaged except your DVD drive/Controller. Try putting the new HDD in another computer, installing windows then putting it back in the HP. If all else fails then flash the bios with an updated image and see if that rectifies the problem.

Assuming you have Windows XP, the hard drive limit would be 137GB. You can go higher than that, but you'd probably have to upgrade your motherboard and do some registry modifications.
