Tricky one! The NV-SD series use the K-Deck mechanism. You can get a service manual free for this type and it will explain what you need to do to the carriage and see if any parts are damaged. It's also linked to a mode switch and it's essential to have the carriage in the right position or the whole deck will go out of sink. And you might need to take it out to test it.
If you type Panasonic K-Deck into google you should find the manual.
