Sirius Mode Selection
While in Sirius satellite radio mode, press S-MOD (22a) (also the SHIFT/SCAN button) to select
from four available modes: Normal, Category, Direct Tune and Set Skip Channel. When the
Category or Set Skip Channel modes are selected, the corresponding icon appears in the display.
When the DIrect Tune mode is activated, the alphanumeric display appears.

I had the same problem and there are a couple of reason why you may not be able to get into Sirius Mode.

If you have a Sirius satelite receiver box, the Sirius ID number will be on it ir the package it came in. The reciever is seperate form the MR-17.2 and is usually a JBL SIR2.5.

Sirius Ready means that there is another piece the company makes that is for sale seperately from the reciever. you need to get the whole sirius system and it will just plug in and play through your existing setup.
