Question about Dell Inspiron 6400 Notebook
Connect your laptop to the internet using Wifi (obviously network connection not available due to your problem) and update the drivers for the network adaptor. Can you use a free Wifi point somewhere to connect via Wifi to help with the driver issue?
There will be a yellow exclamation mark next the network adaptor problem in the WINXP System Properties. To get here right click on My Computer, then select Properties, then Hardware, then Device Manager. Find the offending network card problem, double click the device, Select Driver, then Update Driver. Let WINXP find the driver from the internet.
Alternatively, check the driver you downloaded from the Dell support webpage. Are you sure it was the correct driver for WINXP for the same model of network card fitted to your Dell 6400? A message about incompatible hardware means you are trying to use drivers on hardware which is not compatible with that driver. That is a good sign that you dont have the right drivers.
