Hi, i was having the same problem.
I wanted to upgrade my Ti 89 titanium OS, so i run the Upgrade check inside the Ti Connect App. It downloaded the OS to a folder. Then i tryed to upgrade with that OS, and in the 99% it fails.
I guess something was wronge since the progress bar in the windows downloader app was out of sync with the calculator percentage. I downloaded myself the OS from Ti, and removed all batteries (including the backup). After plugin in the batteries again, i started the Os downloading with the new file, and the progress was perfectly synced with the calculator percentage.

it finished flawleslly and now it is working :)

I assume you are speaking of solving a system of equations with a number of unknowns. If not, please correct me. Here's an example in practice:

If you have a system of 3 equations with 3 unknowns, you would set up your matrix so that the coefficients of each variable for a particular equation are on one row. So, given equations x + y + z = 0, 2x + 3y - 4z = 1, x + -z = -1 you would type the following into your calculator: [[1,1,1,0][2,3,-4,1][1,0,-1,-1]] and press enter to make sure you typed it correctly. notice that in the third row there is a zero, since we have zero time y for the third equation. Then row-reduce the matrix (2nd > 5 > 4 > 4 or in the CATALOG as rref). You should get out the matrix [[1,0,0,-1][0,1,0,1][0,0,1,0]]. This says that x=-1 y = 1 z=0 since my first column contained the coefficients for the x variable, the second for the y variable, and the third for the z variable. The last column contains the solution, the part on the other side of the equals sign.

Check to make sure TI-Connect is looking on the right port, whether USB or serial. If you have a serial cable, you might consider using Ti's Graph-Link software to connect. I have had trouble getting it to work right with TI-Connect. You can find Graph-Link on TI's Education site under Downloads > Connectivity Software. I personally prefer the free program TiLP, which runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux and supports whatever cable you want. Hope this helps!

Try doing a hard reset (hold simultaneously Left + Right + 2nd + On). If it just isn't wanting to display properly, but does turn on, that might help. I think you can do the same thing by taking the four AAA's out and the spare CR1616/CR1620. Otherwise, the battery acid probably ate one of your components and it's time to repair/replace your handy-dandy.

Pressing the green button and, the plus sign is to raise the contrast. Keep doing that process because, if the calculator comes on and, the contrast is to low you'll never know the calculator was ever on. You should also make sure the ports are clean and nothing inside them causing the calculator to short out.

Your only suppose the have all the batteries out for 5 minute but, I had a Ti 85 that I had the batteries out for 20 minutes and, it came on. Leave them out for 5 minutes at the start of this process.

Make sure the batteries are in correctly? The batteries alternate negative/positive, positive/ negative and so on. The first time I put the batteries in, I didn't have them in correctly. I know if it happen to me that anybody could make the same mistake. The small battery should have a plus sign facing up when it is installed properly. And of course, the calculator will never come on if the batteries aren't in correctly.

Setting up the computer and, calculator for new OS installation.

• Make sure TI Connect software is installed on the PC.
• Connect the TI Connectivity cable to the Ti89 titanium and the computer.
• Do not start the TI Connect software, just have it ready and, on the desktop.

Reset the RAM first. If the calculator still won't turn on goto the next paragraph and, set of instructions. On the Ti89 family, press and hold the [2nd] [Left Arrow] and [Right Arrow] keys. then press and release the [ON] key. This should reinitialize the operating system, in which you should see a progress bar or, "Installation in Progress" displayed on the screen.

Hold down the APPS key and, take one AAA battery out of the calculator. Put the one AAA battery back in while still holding down the APPS key. Release the [APPS] key and, be ready to install the new OS v3.10, ASAP!!! The (older Ti89) may need to press [ALPHA] [9] or, just [9] when the calculator display's, "Press to install..." and, then they need to install the new OS, ASAP!!! You have to do this process in the right sequence because, the calculator will be destroyed if you do not.

You can either drag and, drop the new OS into the TI Connect icon (pictured below), on the desktop.

Or click, Start and open Programs, then open TI Tools, then open TI Connect, then open TI OSDownloader. Then just follow the instructions the software gives you. The best way is to drag and, drop the OS into the TI Connect icon because, you know your installing the latest OS. TI OSDownloader might not give you the latest OS version.

If this procedure doesn't work and, is still under "Warranty", I'd see if I could get a replacement from Texas Instruments. Even if out of "Warranty", I'd would still seek replacement with Texas Instruments.

The Operating System (OS) will need to be updated on the TI-89 in order for the TI Connect™ software to detect the status. Try the following procedure to install the OS from the TI-89 Boot Screen. Make sure TI Connect 1.6 is installed on the PC.
• Connect the TI Connectivity cable to the TI-89 and the computer.
• Do not start the TI Connect software.
**Force TI-89 into "Boot screen" (See instructions below**
• "Press I to install..." ([ALPHA]. [ 9 ]).
• Click on Start >> Programs >> TI Tools >> TI Connect >> TI OSDownloader.
• Follow the on-screen directions to install OS version 2.09.
**Steps for Boot Screen:**
• Take one AAA battery out, press and hold down the Apps key while reinserting the battery to force device into the Boot Code screen.
• "Press I to install..." will appear.
Once the OS has completed installation, the TI Connect™ software will be able to detect the TI-89.

You need to re-install your calculator's OS. After this process your Ti 89 Titanium will operate properly. If you do the process below make sure you use new batteries.

Warning!!! If you do this procedure make sure that your computer and, calculator are connect. Use Ti Connect software and, make sure you can install the OS on the calculator without any interruption. At any time even at the very beginning of this process, if your computer or, calculator gets interrupted or you have a power failure during the installation of the OS, your calculator will be destroyed. So not attempt this procedure during a thunder storm.

You can use the Ti OS Downloader but, you will have no idea what OS is stored by the Ti OS Downloader. So, I suggest following my instructions and, installing the newest Ti 89 Titanium OS 3.10v.

Procedure to installing the newest Ti 89 Titanium OS 3.10v.

Link your computer and calculator with the USB cable or, Direct Black Link cable that came with the calculator.

Remove one of the AAA batteries. Press and hold the [APPS] key, and while holding the [APPS] key, replace the battery and turn the unit on. On the older TI-89 you should see "Press I to install code...", and you should press the [9] key to continue. But, on your Ti 89 titanium it should say, "Waiting to receive..." or, "Waiting to received OS...". Now you need to follow the instructions in the paragraph below to restore the calculator's operating system.

Next, drag the Ti 89 Titanium OS 3.10v. that you copied earlier to "My Documents \ My TI Data \ Downloads" out of that folder and, drop it in the "Ti Connect" icon on the desktop. Next the OS Downloader Warning will pop-up. Click, "OK" to continue and, the new OS will begin to install. The Ti Device window should pop up and, click on to the port where your Ti 89 Titanium is located, USB1 cable or Direct Black COM1. Just click, "Select" and, the OS will continue to download. Upon completion the newest Ti 89 Titanium OS 3.01v. will be installed.

I suggest you interrupt the installation with [Esc] or [Diamond][QUIT]. Then download the OS on your computer and drag and drop OS on the open window of TI Connect to transfer it to calculator.
Press the [Diamond][QUIT] several times. If it refuses, all that is left for you to do is remove main batteries and restart the installation as described above.

You do not say if the installation proceeded to some degree or did not start at all. It seems to be hung because the website was too slow.
I suggest you interrupt the installation with [Esc] or [Diamond][QUIT]. Then download the OS on your computer and drag and drop OS on the open window of TI Connect to transfer it to calculator.
Press the [Diamond][QUIT] several times. If it refuses, all that is left for you to do is remove main batteries and restart the installation as described above.
