Gas dryer does not dry in "timed Dry" setting

In some dryer's the control panel relies on a thermistor rather than a CYCLING thermostat to regulate the drum's air temperature by monitoring the component's resistance changes; resistance goes down as temperature increases and up when temperature decreases. Once the drum's air temperature reaches a certain level required to dry clothes, the control panel shuts off the heater. The panel will turn the heater on again and begin another heating cycle when the thermistor indicates that more heat is needed to keep the air temperature constant inside the drum

Lastly check your moister sensor. ( located inside the dryer door usually) Especially if machine seems to shut down early and clothes are still wet.
Test with a meter at room temperature and it should show continuity.
A failed moisture sensor will affect the dryer run time in the automatic moisture sensing cycle but it will not affect the heating of the dryer or the timed cycle. Which are reflected by the thermostats.

Maytag Centennial Gas Dryer: Only runs in "Air Fluff" setting. If any other setting (Normal Dry / Timed Dry) are used the dryer shuts down immediately. If I force the dryer to run by holding down the start...

Hello Kevin;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service appliance technician.

When you run your dryer on fluff you are not using heat. The burning smell is when you use normal dry and the lint starts to burn. This will shut your unit down.

You just need a good cleaning. Nothing major. Send me your model number and I will help you.

Why does my dryer stop heating

Clean your vent!
Try running dryer with vent unhooked if still shuts off could be bad thermostat. Try running on timed dry instead of sensor dry, could be sensor circuit.

Dryer turns on heats up, shuts down, starts again runs for a bit, then kicks off again

This is the device that keeps the motor from over loading/heating. It's a bi/mwetal strip. Maybe a good cleaning of dryer will help but also you did not say if the motor ran and the heat stopped which could be another type problem. Try different setting on timer such at timed or less dry/more dry.

Won't heat up and doesn't shut off

You likely need to replace the element. test the dryer in auto and timed dry cycles. If the element is gone you will have no heat in either.
If the humidity sensor is shot or the dryer vent hose is clogged , the dryer will run forever and not dry or shut off.
Check for blockage first. then run a test cycles on both settings and post back
