Question about D-Link Computers & Internet

2 Answers

For some reason the wireless connection (d-link router DIR-300) has dropped out for my kids' laptops. Either the password we thought we had is wrong or no longer works. My internet supplier advised to contact you to reconfigure & set new security, please advise how, thanks

The last expert i asked said i need a new router, however i have only had this one for less than a year, i don't have the problems of constant disconnect as suggested and don't want to have to buy a new one, as suggested. Surely there is a way to reconfigure the wireless connection, and set new security, the drop off has only ever happened once with the kid's laptops, never with my base computer connection

  • mazg May 03, 2010

yes they can detect all the other wireless connections in the apartment block, including mine, but all are secured with a password. I've forgotten what ours is,or gotten it wrong. My computer is connected to the actual adsl line, so i have no connection problem.

Thank you for following up, but what do you mean by 'log into the router'? Can you explain the steps, i don't really know what process/webpage to put those numbers into?

  • mazg May 04, 2010

Well thanks for following up, hopefully it will work, but I had no idea routers could be bought for under $20, i thought it was around the $80/$90 mark.

Ok, does your kids laptop detect any network? also can you log onto the router.

ok, now you may need to log into the router and get that information. use this info: Default Ip: 192.168.0.1, Default User: admin , Default Pass: admin or (none). Once inside the router, look for wireless network security and note the WEP or what ever security key your kids laptop is asking.

    regards

If no one has changed the password, and the internet connection (wifi) has had disconnects from time to time before this happened then your router has failed.

Usually after about 1-2 years of age the router will start to act up. Usually DLinks last a bit longer but are not immune. The first thing that happens is the wifi will disconnect and then reconnect very quickly. This will happen more and more. Then you may see the wired section disconnect briefly as well. These will occurmore and more as time goes on. Then you may have problems logging onto the router or it will not respond to your attempts at all. Eventually the router will stop working on the wifi and then the wired connections stop.

Unfortunetly there is very little you can do to actually fix the router. You may get it to work for a few days or weeks again by doing a reset but pnce it displays these symptoms then it is just a matter of time before it begins to have problems or fails. We used to try and fix these from time to time but found that all would fail even if the reset or fix appeared to work.

The only thing that fixes it, is simply replace it with a new one. Get another D-Link or a Netgear. They make the more reliable home grade routers from out experience. Stay away from Linksys at this time.

If you want to try to recover the router you can reset it. That will reset it back to factory defaults. Then you can log on using the factory admin logon.

To reset the router, locate the reset button (hole) on the rear panel of the unit. With the router powered on, use a paperclip to hold the button down for 10 seconds. Release the button and the router will go through its reboot process. Wait about 30 seconds to access the router. The default IP address is
192 .168.0.1. When logging in, the username is admin and leave the password box empty.

You will need to be connected to the router with a cable as the wireless will not be setup until afterwards. Open internet explorer or firefox or whatever browser you are using and type http:\\192.168.0.1 in the url box. This will take you to the logon page and there wou want to enter your username and password admin and blank for the password. If you cannot log on at this time then the router has degraded too far and needs to be replaced.

The next window you should see will show the internet setup wizard. Run that and configure you new admin password etc and the type of isp connection usually dynamic. Hit apply and it should reboot. Log back in.

Now we need to reconfigure the wireless. So you can run the wizard for wireless when you see that page. You need to enter a SSID which is like a radio call sign or ident for your network ie MY-NET. Change it as a default one is usually a open invitation to snoop. People see that and will think you may not have setup security as you just used the defaults. Next select your level of security. WEP is fine WPA is ok. WEP is a 5 or 10 character key in letter or number in combo if desired such as 98765 or qwert (don't use obvious things such as phone numbers or your house adress or the first 5 letters of the alphabet etc) WPa is better as the key is longer. Downside is some portable devices dont support it as well as WEP. WPA keys can be something like 'THIS IS MY KEY TO MY NETWORK" Pick a phrase that you know and will remember. You will have to change the settings on your laptops or other wifi devices to reflect these settings. Hti apply and the router will reboot.

Now change the settings on your wifi devices (laptops pdas etc)to match the router settings. You should be able to connect at this time if these settings match. Assuming that you are connected and it is working then you are done.

Now I understand that you may not want to buy a new router and you probably think that it being a year old it isn't the problem but we replace dozens of these each year. We have spent the time with factory engineers trying to solve this on a couple of brands. The factory was unable to fix these nor could they tell us why they were failing. And it is common on all the home grade routers. The majority failed out of warrenty but the odd one was as few as 3 months old. Most occured in the 1-2 year old range. The disconnects are the minor symptom. As soon as you can't log on (assuming correct password etc) then it has failed past the point of being recoverable. If this reboot gets it to behave you may get another few months to a half year of service out of this. Usually you will see the disconnect errors within a week or so. And they will increase in frequency and eventually it will lock you out or fail completely. As I suggested previously you should replace it or will eventually when it fails again. You can usually find a wifi router on sale for under $20.

Just keep an eye out on the sales. You can pick up a Dlink or Netgear (reccomend both) for about $40 normal pricing. The prices have dropped quite a bit over the last few years. Unfortunetly the quality has some some brands as well.

Usually on long weekends or when the moon is blue or the advertising guy had too much coffee (no idea when ;-]) you can find a real steal of a deal and find these same wifi routers for as low as
$15 usually about $25. Anyway just keep an eye on the fliers or check the web pages of any larger chain stores, such as best buy, futureshop, staples, office depot, frys etc.. Sometimes they have a clearance bin in the store with unadvertised manager specials and you can pay next to nothing if you run across one of those. Unless you have brand new laptops a G or G highspeed is all you need. This are conisdered older than the new N's and are slower. The majority of laptops and devices are only G's so unless you have a N wireless card or a N speed laptop you can asave more $$$ by getting a G.

Problem with my wireless router.

To do that, you must first configure your router. Type in your browser the ip of your gateway. To get your gateway ip, type in your command prompt "ipconfig". Once type, you will be prompted with a username and a password. If you used this for the first time, the username and password are the default of your router. Once you are in, there is a menu there that you can configure to put in your wireless password. Choose WPA, it is much stronger password type.
