Question about LG M2094D 20 in. LCD TV
Thanks for using FixYa. From what you have described it seems that you might have a backlight and/or an inverter board issue with this TV set. It could also be due to the inverter circuits for the backlights. The inverter is the power supply source for the backlights. There could also be a screen driver problem; if it is then you have to change the entire inverter board. All this is only recommended if you have some kind of expertise for checking the internal circuitry of the TV as these units have high voltages running even when the set is switched off. The cost to change the inverter board including labor would be around $250, if you get this done by a professional. Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

The TV is probably going in standby. In that case a fault is detected and the power supply is forced to shut down all lines apart the +5V. This is called protect mode, it is explained in Sit.2 below. Among common causes, faulty PSU, inverter or controller board. Troubleshooting explained below.
Situation 1 - Power off
If the TV is shutting down completely, with no led on and no power at all, then the problem is thePSU board. Power cord and on-off switch must be tested before replacingPSU.
If there is no led on, test using a different main socket, check power cord, and check fuse if the power cord is fused. There isno fuse that the user can check on TV.
Situation 2 - Standby
If the TV goes suddenlyin standby instead, that means that the main controller board detecteda fault condition (eg. a wrong voltage or a short), and turned the TVin standby to prevent further damage to internal component.
In this case is said that the TV goes in protect mode (forced standby).
If you have not turned the TV back on yet, follow the troubleshooting on article below.
My television does not start up
Ifyour TV turns back on, and fail again at random time, it can be afaulty PSU, a faulty controller board , or less frequently and inverterfailing.
Here a broad description of how a technician must test the TV:
How to test an LCD TV or monitor PSU and...
Repair is suitable only for a trained person.
Ifyour TV is going in standby at random times, that means that the TV isfaulty. In that case call the manufacturer at the number listed on the owners manual to arrange the repair.
If you are in situation 2 (standby), and you manage to get the TV on and steady, there may also be the possibility of doing a firmware upgrade.
In this conditions the operation is quite risky. If TV shuts down while upgrading you need to replace controller board. Call GE at the number listed on the owners manual, ask if manufacturer reports firmware issues of this kind (there is nothing online), and perform the upgrade followed by the tech support. Here the upgrade:LG Product Support for M2094D-PZ.
If a firmware upgrade procedure gets interrupted, the TV will not start anymore.
If TV is staying on only 5 seconds it is unlikely the firmware, and it may not be possible to perform the upgrade.
Ask GE tech before doing the upgrade. In this case I would test the TV at component level rather then going for a risky upgrade.
